reading stats in asp - 7/26/2003 11:20:49
Although this is not a direct Front page question, It IS a Windows Server question.

I have been searching for a long time for an asp based application that will parse the IIS logs and report stats for the websites. It would be nice to find something that supported at least as much as awstats, BUT would use asp instead of that dreaded perl. (a bonus would be that it was free like awstats is as well) :)

Sorry, but it is a plain fact that perl scripts eat up MUCH more cpu bandwidth than an asp script will.

NOT!!!!!! Please note your " opinions" as such!

Not only is Perl less of a resource hog (http://stylusinc.com/servers/scripts/chapter3.htm)
it is way more secure! The Internet was built on Perl/Apache/Unix and is still the most reliable, secure and popular combination. AFAIK, only PHP is less resource hungry.

WebLog ASP
This free applet is a web traffic monitor which reads your IIS web logs and displays them in a chart.

Thanks Rian....I will in to those links.

Gil,
Yes that is my opinion....and in MY OWN TESTS...I have seen some perl applications and scripts will take the cpu time to 80 and 90 percent when similar apps and scripts done in asp will use half that.

And because of that I prefer to search for asp applications to fit my needs.

I do not doubt that - a poorly written script in any language can do that.

But, to even hint that asp is even close to Perl in effeciency is a gross mistake! If you prefer asp, fine - I have no problem what so ever with that. But advising others based on false information is not helpful.

Cheers...

I apologize to all for what happened to this thread.

I doubt very seriously that a forum, where server issues are to be discussed, on a website dealing with Front Page, is appropriate for the asp vs perl discussion.

Both perl and asp have their place....and neither is going to go away anytime soon.

Each server administrator as well as end user must make their own decisions about what format their scripts and applications will run.

If anyone else has any asp scripts that may fit my criteria, be sure to post a link or recommendation. The more I have to evaluate, the better chance I have of finding one best suited to my needs.

Rick
