Hi everyone,

Is there any easy way to speed up the loading time of a java script? I set up a very nice looking pop-out menu, but there are so many second level items that it takes forever to load. Thanks for any tips.[8D]

1. Faster connection speed (makes downloading quicker)

2. Faster computer

You probably won' t notice a lot of difference on opton #2, but since JavaScript is processed in your browser a 233MHz PC will probably lag a bit compared to a 2GHz or better...

You might want to look at your external JS file for the menu. From what you are saying I am guessing it to be around 40kb plus in size. Not knowing which one you are using I would venture to say trim down on your effects that surround the menu and the fly out menus.

Yes, it' s even bigger than that. It just got away from me, as far as size goes. As I started adding products it looked good and loaded fine. As I continued to add more products it got slower and slower. When I got all if the products added, it was verrrry slooow! I am going to change the nav structure by using some additional pages for the the first level, and not have the fly-out try to do everything. I would then be able to add smaller fly-outs on each first level page.[8|]

Just a little advice from someone who has been there and done that. All these neat little advances in using javascript can lead to an unsatisfactory user experience. You should pay close attention to your web metrics and see what percentage of your users have javascript turned off. If it is more than a few percent, you shold ixne any special effects that present important information, fly out menus being one of them.

Surfers with javascript turned off is increasing slowly but surely. Many who surf regularly may turn off javascript for security reasons. Some companies may disable javascript for their employees mainly due to virus issues. Don' t let all the fancy stuff hurt the visitors browsing experience! ;)

P.S. Our external javascript files usually do not exceed 5kb in size. If you are over 40k, you have some very serious usability issues at hand that you may not be aware of. Over 50% of the surfing population is still at 56k or below. 40k of javascript loading will chase a visitor away immediately. If you look at your statistics and see a large percentage of single access page visits to your home page or any other main entrance page, then you may have some problems that you are not aware of, mainly download times for the pages that house that javascript.
