web submission to search engines - 8/6/2003 15:48:31
Hi all-- My site is: www.ryanartduo.com It' s a month or so old, Front Page 2002. My wife and I are artists, and the site is a gallery of our work. Now that it' s built I' d like it to get exposure. I' m looking at search engines, and I' m not sure which way to go. I see Excite.com offers a years worth of listing for a $100., and partnering with other engines for another $50. Don' t have money to burn, so I' m cautious. Would that be a good idea? I noticed in the Forum someone mentioned paid inclusion in Google for $49. I' ve searched through Google, but I' ve not seen that. How would I find it? If anyone has some thoughts on this issue, I' d really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance, Martin.

OK... I am assuming you have your meta tags in place and alt image tags contain keywords... if not, please let me know and we can start there. Start with Google... it' s free. Go to http://www.google.com/addurl.html. I get close to 65% of my traffic from Google. Don' t pay anyone for inclusion on this engine. You should only pay if you enroll in Google Adwords. Next, go to http://selfpromotion.com/ and take the time to READ through the site. Then sign up for an account and promote away. This should get you started. Keep in mind you are looking at a few weeks before the engines will list your site. In the meantime, tell everyone you know about your site and make sure it is on your stationary, flyers, business cards, voice mail, bumper sticker and anywhere else you can think of. Good luck!

Cooper-- Should have added, I have tags: descriptions and keywords and titles, but not sure what " alt" means. Martin

quote:
" alt" is alternate text for an image A great place to strategically place a few more key words... Just two more quick cents... I hand submitted to the major engines, used the free submitter on bravenet.com and bought a copy of Traffic Builder off eBay for $4.00. I was getting a fair amount of hits and then I started asking folks with sites related to mine to trade links. I did this for a while and then got out of forums (like this one), submitted some products to the Microsoft FrontPage Developer program, and more hits came. I am sure there are many on this forum who will argue the point, but I ran my site sucessfully for nearly 4 years before I started paying for search engine placement nearly 60 days ago. Just two more cents... hopefully saving you two cents.

Google is a must have. They don' t have a pay for inclusion (PFI) program - you can only purchase ads. Close to 80% of my internet orders come from Google or one of their partners (AOL search etc.). Close to 20% of my internet orders come from MSN. MSN *does* have a PFI program. I pay somewhere around 30$ per URL per year.

You might also want to considerinktomi . This will get you into MSN, Looksmart, Overture, Hotbot & About. It gives you: Fast 48-72 Hour, inclusion into the Inktomi Search Engine database. Your Web Page will also be refreshed every 48 hours. Your URL (Web Page) stays included in Inktomi' s database for 12 months. Click-thru reporting. Showing how many visitors have hit your Web Page. It has worked well for my customers who use it. Erin

Don't forget www.dmoz.org. It's free but can take a while to get in. Make sure you follow their guidelines and submit to the right category. The more effortless you make it for an editor to approve your submission, the more likely it will be done.
