Keep layout regardless of display size? - 8/7/2003 14:15:35
I am basically an amateur in using Front Page 2000, but i do control the changes and what not on our company website. It seems like the may be certain ways to control my issue. I am looking for all suggestions and going from there. Basically, our webpage is fine when you view it on a machine with 600 X 800 display setting. But anything outside of that, changes the way that machine looks at our page. Is there a setting? or something that keeps the layout the same, regardless of what view the pc is using? Is this what CCS' s are for? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Dan

Hello DanMoran. There are two environments that we normally work in; fixed and/or relative. In a fixed environment, your <table>s and <td>s will have exact units of measure such as a <table width=" 740" > or <td width=" 100" >. In a relative environment, your <tables>s and <td>s will have relative units of measure such as <table width=" 100%> or <td width=" 25%>. Working in a relative environment requires a little more planning as you have to account for wrapping of content. Let' s use a 3 column tabled layout. You have a column at left, one in the center and one at the right. Maybe the one at left and right have a relative width of 20%. The center has a relative width of 60%. If you are working in a 100% relative environment, your overall width should never exceed 100%. Everything is relative to the users viewport, or the window they are browsing in. When working in a fixed environment, you typically design for your lowest common denominator which in this case is usually 800x600 (our directory targets 800x600 but still views fine at 1024x768). Those two resolutions make up close to 94% of the market. I see it dropping steadily though as more and more people move to flat screen monitors. You can also mix both fixed and relative to achieve a happy medium between the two. You fix the width of your left and right columns, and then make your center relative. I was just browsing some really nice templates, um, where was that? Oh, it was the new Outfront IBS Templates. Those are very relevant to this topic. ;)
