Hi,

The web site I am optimizing has right click disabled (due to javascript)

I downloaded the pages from the server, however right click STILL remains disabled, so I can't optimize the page (is change text, meta tags)

Please advise.

temporarily remove the javascript that disables the right click, or open the page in notepad instead of FP or edit in HTML view...

Front Page Normal view is emulating IE (I think) so it's processing the script while you're trying to work on the page...

(I'd actually remove the script all together, since it's pretty much a useless function of Javascript... and eliminates some options that many visitors use right click for such as navigation)

It' s typically done using a javascript.

Apart from the ethical problems inherent in the fact that you are disabling a legitmate function on my computer. You are also sending a hostile message to legitimate visitors to your site.

Moreover anybody with even a shred of " web savvy" can get around such scripts in approximately 5 seconds.

IMO such scripts are evidence of rank amateurism on the part of the web site developer and not only do I leave but also include the url in my newsletter under the heading of " sites not to visit because the site owners despise their visitors."

Some graphic artists require, in their terms of use, that you enable the disable right-click script on pages that you use their graphics on.
I think its just extra work and the latest Internet Explorer has the little bar pop when you mouse over a picture. But I heard there is a way to disable that too.

If anyone must do this there is a script here. I recommend reading the popup explaining that the script is by no means fool proof and will not stop anyone determined to copy images from your page(s)

Hello Katerina and welcome to Outfront,

I' m sorry I simply cannot agree with that argument. There are plenty of ethical ways of doing it without resorting to such insecure means as a javascript.

.htaccess for linux/unix hosted sites, and products such as spooky login for windows hosted to efficiently and ethically protect graphics etc. For those unwilling to go down that rout There are other techniques such as watermarking that can also be used.

You can use the following metagtag to disable the microsoft image toolbar:

<META HTTP-EQUIV=" imagetoolbar" CONTENT=" no" >

and this one to prevent any Microsoft product from automatically generating smart tags.

<meta name=" MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content=" TRUE" >

No scripting required.

Hi Brian,

That's not quite accurate. It did come to pass, they did introduce it, they damn things did work, and Microsoft hastily withdrew it after I amongst several thousand other people hit them with a writ.

M'soft's record being m'soft's record there's absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that they won't try to reintroduce it or something like it. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.:)

Not really. This is easily overcome. ALso keep in mind that you are also disabling some peoples way of doing things in IE. Examples: print, add bookmark, etc.. however per your request...

Well what I am doing now at my site is changing all of my MIDI files to wma files. They lose alot of kick when I do this but I have to do it to save space and to keep people from copying my work.

MIDI files are much better to save on webspace. I was just wondering.
