It's a New story - 2/7/2001 20:21:00
I have a new story, written by my Mother -in-law to add to my site, and have done it hereIt's big, but I don't think splitting it into parts will help. Does it fit the way it is? Any and all suggestions welcomed, but remember who wrote the story!

Hi, Mack!I'm guessing you took this from a Word document? You've got all kinds of things going on with your fonts (I'm using NN) and gobs of "junk code." For some reason, FP makes a mess with things transferred directly from Word. The work-around would be to Copy from Word, Paste in Notepad, Copy from Notepad, then Paste into FP. It is rather long for one page. I believe I would split it up. The advantages would be faster download time and less scrolling monotony. You've certainly got enough material. Fascinating reading! And I love the pictures. Would you please let me know when you've made corrections? I'd like to see it again in better form. Sandy ------------------ www.alleghenyweb.com

Just to explain (from the little I know ), when you copy from Word, you are taking the layout/fonts/etc ...not just the words. Notepad strips all of this and gives you just the text. Wordpad sometimes works to leave you a bit of the layout, but can leave you extra coding you may not want or need. Changing the font to Arial or Verdana will make it much easier to read, along with splitting this into several pages. I'd suggest only 1-3 paragraphs per page. This will capture the interest, and you'll be able to use larger photos. I'd like to see it with just Next > at the end of each section, with links to back/home/next at the bottom of each page. On the home page (I guess I'm thinking of this as a sub-web, rather than just one page of your site) there could be some info leading into the story and links to the other pages in your site. Mack, I like the changes you made My question...what's wrong with putting her story in the same format as Tom's? It works well, looks great and would keep the site looking uniform (no pun intended!). D'ya mind if I comment on the home page again? I like the new layout with the quotes and pics to the side and the "Chapters" thing happening. I'd STILL like to see the "Civvy Street..." title larger, at first I thought you'd changed the site name to "Chapters" Also, the chapter links themselves...I'd just capitalize the secondary words, thereby getting rid of the period which for some reason looks a bit off. (i.e. The Damage as opposed to The damage.) I haven't time to read the story tonight but I'll make the time this weekend; I find it all very interesting. Looks good...getting bigger and bigger! And of course, better and better!

Hi Mack,I'm in a bit of a rush but thought it might be a good idea to include a "printer friendly" version of the story. I'll have a better look and read later on - looks interesting. Cheers Andy ------------------ Internet Business Solutions S.L. (Spain)

I've been working on this again, particularly on what Jego said about the home page. Is this better? If so...I think I am finished for this year. Thanks to all.http://www.macksites.com/menu.html

Beautifully done!I just caught a couple of details. Part 2 of the London story has slipped down and the column on the left could be a little shorter to match the length of the content on the right. I believe I would be tempted to divide the London story even more so there's not quite so much reading on each page. (I know you didn't want to hear that.)
