I sure could use input on my site. Most of my customers tend to 35 or over and so I have a huge navigation bar. I can't think of good ways to get around it. I want the information so they don't have to dig and yet it seems awkward now.
Thanks for your help!

My, oh my, oh my! You've got some good stuff on your site. Too bad you like doing web stuff. I'd love to get my hands on it and reorganize it!!!

Basically, you've got two sites rolled into one--your restaurant site and a Madison, IN site. I would begin by making your restaurant the focus, since that's what your original goal was to do, right? ...have a site for your business? Make the navigation bar for the restaurant part of the site.

THEN at the bottom...or off to the side...however you want to work your layout...make a coordinating banner for the Historical Madison section of your site. Make it obvious that it's a link! Mention some of the things they can find there. You could incorporate it on each of the restaurant pages if you wanted.

THEN link those different business pages together with a totally different navigation bar, just as if it was a completely separate site (include your business in that nav bar). AND either at the top or bottom, have a spiffy ad banner for your restaurant saying something like...this page is sponsored by Key West Shrimp House (linked to your home page).

What do you think?

Thanks Sandy!
Your right the navigation is an unruly mess! And your correct about making the restaurant the focus! What I'm truly concerned about is making it too hard to find the info. (in the past I've had customers who have printed out the web site and used as a tourist guide) I will begin working on your ideas and see what I can come up with! Thanks for all your help!!!!!

Thank Goodness for OUTFRONT!!!!

I really don't think your navigation is a mess. I just think you're taking focus away from the restaurant.

Personally, I'd place a sharp, eyecatching banner at the bottom of the page to draw attention to the other Madison pages.

If people are printing those pages, when you redesign, try to make the entire page fit onto one 8.5x11 sheet of paper. You know...adding a coupon to each page is an idea, too! It could either be an offer from the merchant or make it from your restaurant.

Scott K,

I tried to restrain myself but I just can't resist telling you this because the people who are regular contributors to this board are probably too nice do it.

Don't design your site for the 35 and over crowd. When you say "Most of my customers tend to 35 or over and so I have a huge navigation bar. " ,it's a bit insulting to the 35 and over. I can tell you as a "50 something and over" person, that if these people are internet-saavy enough to know how to access the internet and check out your site, they know the difference between a site with good or bad navigation, good or bad information.

Good navigation on a web site is good for anyone of any age whom you are trying to attract to your site. Approach your re-design with that attitude.

How to do it? I'm no expert and am just beginning to learn web design so I can't tell you how. Just know that you need to approach it with a different focus or attitude about your visitors/customers.

Your site has great information and just needs better organization and navigation. This you already know. People at this forum give great advice and can help you.

Just take this advice from me. Don't underestimate the ability of your uhm, (over 35) audience. I assure you, they are quite capable.

Scott K,

Thank you soooo much for taking my criticism in the spirit that I intended to convey! Hope someone will be as honest with me when I post mine for critique. Your site has great potential. Good luck with it. This is a great site to come to for help.
