Need some quick help with Frontpage. I usually design just using Textpad, or another text program. However, I am currently designing a website in which the client wants to continue updating it themselves. However the client is not that computer adept, so we decided that I could put it into Frontpage, teach them how to do it, and then they could edit the text easily, just like using Word. So here's my problem:

My webpage uses a menubar at the top, that has hidden layers, and when you mouseover a part of the image, the layer appears -- a standard menu bar. But when I copy and paste the code into Frontpage, in the Normal view (where you would edit the text) it shows the "hidden" layers, and overlaps the text that needs to be edited. Is there anyway I can hide these layers for editing, so that the client can then edit the text, and not bother with them?

Good question ....

I've got close to the same situation as far as the "hidden" layers being visible in normal view ..... and I was wondering the same thing as jayhawk1919 ....

It's infuriating but there's no workaround that I know of.

Well, what do you do then? If you were using style sheets, how would you edit text that appears under it in Frontpage?

(You as in, you yourself, not the general sense.)

Are there any other options you would suggest?

Anything? Because this is a big problem if they cannot update independant of me.

I have never used layers in FP
but I use them in Dreamweaver all of the time
they hide with the click of a button

I'm no fan of Dreamweaver (yes it's a superb tool, yes I use it quite a lot, I simply don't like it's "look and feel" - no rational reason for this.) But Shirley's suggestion is a good one.

The other solutions are:


1. To train your client thoroughly, my approach. (Or get a specialist to do it, if you're not an experienced trainer. I am a very experienced trainer so and there's an art to it. This isn't to denigrate your skills but training "non-adepts" is definitely not for everybody. I shudder when I think of my early courses. )

2. Do the client editable bits as includes (SSI or the Frontpage version thereof) and let them use whatever they like on that.

Option 2 may not be an easy option for you, as it is for me, Denmark has massively high levels of computer literacy among all age groups. But if your design will cope with it, or can be made to, then the client can edit/update that in isolation from the rest of the site using whatever software they feel like. Thereby ensuring it retains its design integrity.

You're welcome - Macromedia contribute may well be your best option.

Hmmm, I believe if you put those navigation elements into FP includes that the problem would no longer be present. Are you familiar with Includes? If so, try out one page and see what happens.
