Acrobat Form File Size - 8/17/2003 17:48:52
My employer distributed an Acrobat form (a class roster) where the upper portion of the form was fillable on the computer, but the lower portion (the portion were the students' names and employers were recorded) was supposed to be filled in by hand once the form had been printed. I wanted a version that allowed for both computer and handwritten input, so I inserted form fields in all of the rows in the lower portion of the form. The form file is now over 1 MB in size, where it was around 300K. This is not unmanageable, but I suspect that there is some way to reduce it. Does anyone know of a way to reduce the file size and keep all those form fields? There are over 100 fields on the form.

Hi Tim, what version of Acrobat are you using? On V5 (as well as V6, and probably 3 and 4): Use File > Save As will help reduce the size a bit, rather than just 'Save'. You can aslo go to Tools > PDF Consultant > Audit Space Usage to see just what is taking up the room on your document. Here is an article (it's a PDF) on optimizing file size with V 5 http://studio.adobe.com/learn/tips/acr5reducepdf/pdfs/acr5reducepdf.pdf V 6 Pro has an optimizer that looks quite good: http://www.adobe.com/epaper/tips/acr6optimize/main.html I'm still using V5...

Wattle, I read your post with interest. Since I have recently acquired Acrobat Pro V6, I went back to some of my previous (two year old documents created in V4) and did a Save As... as instructed on the Adobe site. My previous file was 796 KB, and the new file was 796 KB. A second file was 986 KB (V4) and the new file was 987 KB (V6). Oh well!!!
