Link Networks - Good or Bad? - 8/18/2003 16:34:15
I am really confused on the issue of link programs. Some swear by them. I was just in the process of signing up with one, and then I read an article citing them as the number one thing that will spell disaster for your search engine marketing efforts. Here is a link to the article:

http://www.marketleap.com/report/ml_report_45.htm

So, which is it? Can one enter a program and do okay if they are very selective about which sites they link to. Some of the sites I have visited have 1000's of links on their links pages, and most of them have nothing to do with their site. However, I have run some searches for some of the key terms these sites are using, and they do seem to rank pretty high. Any ideas?

When I started looking into this around three years ago it wa on the grey edge. Now I would avoid them avidly.

Just my .02,

Brian

Brian, is that because even if you're not link spamming, the spiders will associate you with those who are and penalize you?

Incidentally, I kinda had an idea that it was something to avoid. I will keep doing manual searches, trying to find sites that are on theme with my own.

Thanks,

Mike R

Yup, like being associated to a bad neighborhood.

The above comment is for you linking to them. Of course you can never control who links to you.
