If you had just $100 to use for an advertising budget what would you do with it. I'm thinking the phone book or newspapers.

Really grabbing at nothing here.

This is not "Field of Dreams" I built it and they didn't come.

Thanks!
Rich

Rich, I think you would be hard pressed to find a yellow pages that will even list your number for a hundred bucks. And newspapers won't let you advertise websites in their classified sections. This leaves the retail space, which can start at around $400.00 for a 1x1. I'm sure there are exceptions, but this is what I've discovered.

Personally, I think you would be better trying some pay-per-click methods. If you know the keywords and keyword groups that you want to target, you can get started for less than 50 bucks. I am learning about this subject myself right now, so maybe someone else could expand on PPC benefits. Also, there is a brief tutorial here at Outfront. Just click on the "Tutorials/FAQ" link at the top of the page.

Thanks I'll look at the FAQ you mentioned. Like you I would appreciate any advice. I've done the meta tags. If you go to google, yahoo and msn and type me in I'm there. Has been that way for a while. Just want to increase traffic. I even used the little football pool from brainjar.com and setup a mailing list for the upcoming football season. Will work for food. LOL

Thanks!
Rich

I would buy 1 text link to my web site on a page rank 6 site. The PR6 site would place my link on all their pages and I would typically get 10 to 100 backlinks within a week. This coupled with 5 or 6 guestbook links (they STILL count) would land me in Google within 2 weeks and I would likely have a PR 4 in a month.

If I looked hard enough I may find a PR7 for $100 per month.

I would get 200 color print flyers done up at http:www.greatcolorcopies.com/ $30 bucks+shipping. Something ridiculas like "free hosting with site" 100% Gurantee

Then I would give 2 kids $20 bucks each to hand out the flyers at the newest chic business park.

I would then spend the other 30 bucks mailng the same people the remainder of the flyers and follow upi with a phone call. All of that is assuming you wanted web business.

If you have a product i would do the same thing put give away a sample to the folk who have a need for it. Then follow up.:)

Thanks,
Barry

Joe, this is a topic that really interests me. How exactly do you "buy 1 text link to [a] . . . web site on a page rank 6 site?" I'm not exactly sure where to begin.

Thanks,

Mike R

Mike,

While I buy 1 text link, they almost always put me on each page. If you pay to play you have a right to ask to be on every page.

First, find sites that you would like to have link to you. I will leave it up to the reader to discover which sites to go after, but essentially you just ask to run ads on their site. Small ads :)

I have never asked for recipricating links. I don't link to people unless their site matches the content of my site or they are willing to pay. Also, guestbooks still work so sign up for a few of them. Too many and the theory is Google may penalize you, but I always sign 4 or 5 and they are listed in all my backlinks.

Hehehe, I'm going to play devil's advocate and be somewhat sarcastic, please don't take it personal! ;)

Wow, $100.00 for an advertising budget? That does not leave you with a whole lot of options, does it? There were some good suggestions above. Working with $100.00 is not going to do you much good. You might want to take that $100.00 and find a local SEO/SEM and invite them to dinner, on you, and see if you can pick their brain.

If that is not an option, then save the $100.00 until the next addition to the budget. Add the two together and then select from the options you have available to you. These days, $100.00 will get you very little from an advertising perspective.

Maybe head down to the local sign shop and have them make a vinyl cut decal for your vehicle promoting your business. You'll get more exposure driving around with a vehicle that has your URI plastered on it than anything else mentioned above.

I have a local client who has done a Vehicle Wrap and it was one of the best things they could have done for local advertising. There are three of these vehicles out there and we can easily pinpoint when they've been out and about advertising as the visitors to the site increase on those days around the time the vehicles were out and about.

I'm with barry a hundred percent on this one.

When my husband and I started our printing business years ago, that was the only thing we could afford to do...and it worked. Don't under estimate the effectiveness of the humble flyer when comparing apples to apples, ie: the amount of bang for the bucks. Few people in this high tech age think of printed material and knocking door to door. But it can be very, very effective and provide a nice return.

Design your flyer well.

I think I will try the Flyer deal. Being raised in Maryland and now living in Florida, I'm getting advice from both of my homes.

Thanks!
Rich

I'd do step one above.

Except, I'd hand out the flyers myself - and go door to door in the business district handing them out.

Do a mailing like suggested above.

Buy a good bottle of scotch and when I finished the scotch, I'd follow up on the leads from the efforts ... :)

Have you done a press release??
If you write a good one and send it to local magazines and papers, you may get a feature story or at least a mention in the business section. Omaha Magazine did a story on me and best of all it was FREE. I had just done the omaha symphony showhouse website for FREE so I had some of the people involved with that put a bug in the editors ear as well.

The angle they chose for my story was how a 50 something grandmother started a new career and business. I wasn't thrilled at everyone knowing my age but it worked. I hadn't included any of that in my press release but when the writer interviewed me she keyed in on it. Now... even though it is a new career and business I had been in the computer field since 1970 so people assumed I knew what I was doing :)

I don't quite understand the need to spend any money ....
and giving advice when we don't know what your or business is about is a bit of a shot in the dark....

Depending on what it is ... the advice would be different ...

If you want to spend money I suggest google adwords... from what I've read they seem the nost cost effective netwise.

without knowing what your site or business is about .. other general comments in getting visitors is to answer questions in ng's lists and forums complete with sig line in your subject matter ... when I answer posts I get a flurry of sign ups and buys. Produce and ezine ... again the same thing happens ... get your site in the search engines ... if your site is regarding local business as well as international .. put a notice in the post office (you can pay for good spot) also put a note in the ads section ... pennies for that one (well £1) (or whatever the equalivent is in your country re monies and post office) ... if it's to do with baby stuff put notes up in the health centre .. ask your local doctors can you put it on their site ... look for local sites about your villiage ... and further afield your town ... and then city ... and advertise where free and pay for what you think gets most looked at ... we have a local site here and most of the shops advertise in it... the post office everyone goes to ... and the notes window gets looked at all the time ... when there is a local school fair or carnaival advertise in their booklets .. the local primary charged £10 for half a page spread, make relationships with others in your field ... fit in where they don't cover and vice a versa advertise each other's sites ... if you do work for someone else that has a big budget you can piggyback on their publications ... earning you subs, money and more rep... get yourself more known... oh and write articles in your subject matter with a nice blurb about yourself ...and your site for publication in other ezines and sites.
