Can we please try to reduce the hysteria a little - 8/21/2003 17:33:57
I and my colleagues have spent more time recently helping people recover from the effects of ludicrously bad advice given in a variety of fora by self appointed "experts" or "power users" anent the recent wave of viral and other malware episodes than we have actually helping people recover from the attacks themselves. May I therefore make a semi polite request on behalf of myself and everyone else in the gorilla group: Unless you actually KNOW about server administration (and I don't mean by that that you have read the "Dummies Guide.") Unless you have had EXPERIENCE of locking down a server properly and have done it more than once including remotely. Unless you actually KNOW how to set up and maintain rewrites and bad bot lists and how to ban by ip among other basics Unless you know how for example NAT works or why to give another extremely easy example you should never choose a software firewall that includes a rudimentary ftp server. Unless you KNOW the difference between defacement, DOS, and DDOS. (the little gem I have in mind here was from an outfront menmber) Unless you KNOW about things like this then the chances are that you are doing exactly what the virus writers want you to do. So here is our request: Will you for God's sake stop doing what the virus writers want you to do by spreading your ignorance about how to fix it, your ludicrous conspiracy theories about an all encompassing multiphase "attack," and increasing the hysteria. - In other words please shut up. Thank you. Thor Knudsen on behalf of all the gorillas

ORIGINAL: caywind yes I do believe the Internet is under an attack that will attempt to shut it all down I am glad that I checked this before going to bed. I have no idea why you thought the posting above was aimed at you. I have no quarrel with accuracy of the or qulatiy or timeliness of the information you have provided in recent days. 'Nor do I have any quarrel with the information on your site. As a matter of style rather than substance I might have laid it out differntly and also done a "primer" for beginners in "ABC baby talk" Perhaps I would also be more "academic" in tone. But all of that is a matter of style rather than substance. In the unlikely event of my wanting to "attack" you I will of course have the elementary courtesy to email you with a list of what you have said that's misleading and of the damage that it could do. I did this with several people whom I will not embarass by naming. I will point out that all of them were horriffied at the potential consequences of their misinformation. - I would expect you to display a similar level of courtesy and professionalism towards me. I disagree strongly with your interpretation of the current wave. (I most certainly do not disagree that such an attack is coming.) (I disagree even more strongly with the email I got today from a Concerned Christian Group based in Missisipi that it was an attempt at revenge ordered by the UN secretary genreal at the behest - wait for it - of the current Pope and Saddam Hussein - hohum, I don't think that will fly far :-) ) IMO The pattern of the current malware episodes are the author refining the code and experimenting with differnt payload dielvery techniques. - Earlier versions when dissassemmbled were really rather inept. In general I think an increase in knowledge is a good thing in the case of this particular person or persons I must admit I do not. TK August 22nd (at least over here and not by much) 2003

Sorry, guess (as an American) I'm just a little sensitive, lately. Plus I live in California, plus my largest clients are the school districts of my area. All of the madness is festering one network layer above mine so maybe you see why we feel a little beleaguered.... The community college went down yesterday, and I contacted all of those guys, beforehand.... Again, I apologize, let us maintain our vigilance, try to make it through this
