What's the best way to turn a GIF or JPG into a "vector" image so I can then change colors and size?

Cooper,
A vector image is a scalable image, often thought of a "drawing" or "shape" image. for example you often use vector images to transform font shapes. Its a different medium. A standard image (picture etc.) would not be a vector. You can change color and resize Jpg and Gif images.

I actually have a client with some old logos they want to me dress up and present as options on their site redesign. I would like to alter some colors, the font and adjust the size of the logos to fit the three final designs I am presenting to them.

it depends on how complicated the logo design is, if it's too complicated, ur better off photoshoping it instead.

If it's a solid design, nothin' fancy, tracing it on flash should do the job. :)

You can do all of that with a .jpg or .gif image. If the fonts are not what you want select the area, cover it with the color behind and add the new font. There is no need to change them to vector.

If you have a vector object to start out with.....

They are different babies.

My comments were only to say that an image does not have to be vector to be edited successfully.

Cooper....Without seeing the logo it is hard to know what will work and what won't but you can cover the text if possible, then lay a vector layer on top and redo the text as vector. Same thing with lines and curves. Essentially you can lay a vector layer over the old raster layer and copy (trace or re-create) the logo on the vector layer with the raster logo showing as a guide. You can then delete the old raster layer underneath....

If you edit them as raster which they are now remember to up the colors on the .gif and to save the .jpg in a lossless format. (The .gif is already lossless.)

There is no easy way.

For the most part, a jpg or gif...will need to be re-drawn in a vector program to produce a vector image.

.......easier way is to trace it in flash then play around with it till it's perfect........

when i said trace with vector i don't meant trace it shape for shape, line for line in photoshop


i meant autotrace, turns raster into vector instantly, with mistakes here and there

Cookiebox is right. Flash is very useful for turning a bitmap into a vector image and you can even export into a vector format (such as .ai). As long as the logo is pretty simple, this is the way to go. Otherwise I would just trace it in Illustrator.

Here's how to make a vector image from a raster or scanned image in PSP 8:

1. Open PSP 8.
2. File, Import, Twain, Aquire
3. Adjust Scanner software to Black and White. (my Cannon scanner automatically adjusts resolution to 300 dpi)
4. Adjust Scanner software scale to desired size. Adjust it here because it will look better than trying to resize the picture in PSP.
5. Scan it.
6. When you have the image in PSP you will have to close the scanner software by File, Exit Twain Session, before you can do the next steps.
7. Click on the blue top border to select your raster image.
8. Smooth the edges this way: Adjust, Add Remove Noise, Edge Preservation Smooth. I cranked the slider to the max. This step takes a minute or so for PSP to complete so be patient. When this step is completed you should notice a distinct improvement in edge sharpness.
9. Copy your image (Ctrl C)
10. Create a vector layer by Layers, New Vestor Layer. (I left all options to the default)
11. Ctrl V to paste your previous copy to the vector layer. Delete the underlying raster layer.
12. VIOLA you now have a vector representation of your scanned picture (Logo)

There are a few companies out there that will convert jpgs & gifs to vectors. The one I have used is vikingarts.com. Their fee is based on the complexity of the image. I was happy with their work but I would like to learn to do it myself.
