New Teacher Center website - 8/27/2003 21:37:00
Hello:
A few opinions on this new web site would be appreciated:
Cattaraugus Allegany Teacher Center (upstate NY)
I used the available navigation tools in FP and I've grown to like them. I tried hover buttons in the shared border, but the pages seemed to load very slowly on a dial up connection. I'm using navigation bars in the shared left border now. Not all pages are done, but you'll get the idea.

Here's the temporary location:
http://users.adelphia.net/~thouseknecht/

Thanks

Tim,

Nice work. :)

1. Stay away from the FP hover buttons they are not stable. If you want hover buttons use javascript. You can do so much these days with CSS that that's always an option. Some people would even say CSS is a much better option.

2. Don't forget alt-text for graphics.

3. The underlined text "Cattagurus" and "Alleghany" under the NYSTC logo look a lot like links; I'd think about removing the underline.

Hi Tim, ditto Tony's comments :) You are off to a great start with this.

Your site was really interesting - am 'Minster in Charge of Employee Enrichment' at a school when I'm not traumatizing Frontpage and making a hash of HTML :)

Just a couple of comments regarding content (please don't take this to heart, they are observations only).

I was wondering if the homepage could be altered a bit and the Mission Statement moved to a page of it's own. You could probably grab a few key points to leave on your homepage, and then under this place the info from 'Web sections Described', and move that off your listing of links. Reasoning - the mission statement takes quite a bit of reading, and, as is the nature of mission statements, seems a bit dry to have as an introduction to your site. Moving the 'web sections described' will do away with the double up of link information and draw the eye to what is available straight away.

Generally, text is easier to read left aligned rather than centered. I tried to click on your underlines in general text, but they were not links. I think most people expect underlined text to be a link (as Tony mentioned above), so that may need a rethink. On the main page, I clicked on 'Tim Houseknecht, Director' expecting to read a little about you but my email opened up - no big deal, but perhaps 'Email Tim..' may be a little clearer.

There is a bit of blank space at the bottom of the pages. Did not look at your source code so not sure why, probably an easy fix. The fonts on Links and History seems a bit different to the other pages. On the members page there is a long listing of email address - this thread regarding Spam may be of interest to you: Email Address on Websites

Again, please don't take this to heart, just some random thoughts. I think your site is great! :)

Thanks for the input. I will move the mission statement off of the first page. Our former director had it there, but your advice is correct. I agree about the underlined text that aren't links. I originally wanted to use hover buttons because I had difficulty modifying the link color in a theme. I like a darker area in the shared border (to break things up a bit), but I had to use the same link color in the navigation bars as on the pages because of the theme. I'll start playing with CSS as time allows.

Thanks!

Site seems to have moved. What's the new URL and I'll take a look.

They moved it for me! I emailed them 3 days ago with no reply. So much for me posting the permanent site with Adelphia.

Sorry.

There was a problem with the address for some reason.
Try this link:

Hi Tim,

Nice site. Very intuitive. Just a couple of suggestions:

http://users.adelphia.net/~thouseknecht/members.htm

On this page, I hope those email addresses are scrambled with a java script or the robots will glean them and the folks will be pummeled with spam. If the addresses aren't scrambled, try a tool such as the one at http://hiveware.com/

http://users.adelphia.net/~thouseknecht/documents.htm

Tim, I notice that you use an orange that is very close to red for some narrative. In every other spot on your site, you are using red to denote a hyperlink. I might change the color of the script away from a color that is used for hyperlinks throughout the site.

In several places, you use underlining. I might use italic if you need to set it off. Underlining is generally reserved for hyperlinking. It threw me off when words were not loaded with a link.

Congratulations on the new job. I wish you well with it, a former Niagara county boy, Dave

Thanks Dave. I'll definitely do something with those email addresses. I certainly don't need the problems you described.

Really like the flow of the page.

One simple suggestion on the home page: I would take off the words "Web sections Described" It's kinda like writting a paper and starting off about what you are going to wirte about. Just write about it. I would also consider making images for each of those sections. Simple images though. It would give the page a little more pop.
