Halina -> Feedback please... (9/10/2003 9:27:50)

Hi

http://www.1newagecd.com

I'd be grateful for some honest feedback on this site.
(I'm a musician/marketer, not a web-designer...)

Thanks a lot!

Halina

Donkey -> RE: Feedback please... (9/10/2003 10:05:14)

I am also not a professional designer, (and as it happens a marketer and ex musician).

I like the design & feel of the site, but I would change that big long page. It would be easier for the user if you changed it into several smaller pages with links. Most users don't like scrolling endlessly down long pages.

The music samples played OK.

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (9/10/2003 14:05:32)

Nice to meet af fellow marketer/musician!

About the long page: it seems to me that half of the population prefers long pages (you don't have to click much, and you can quickly scan the whole thing) and the other helf prefers linked pages (you don't have to scroll much, and you can check out the parts you want).
I think I'll leave it like that for the moment.
Later on, when there's some decent traffic to the site, I could test which is best....

Thank you for your feedback!

Halina

Hi Halina,

I agree with my long-eared, four-legged friend. The scroll is much, much too long. All the reading I have done re: surfers habits suggest 3, maybe 4 printed pages at the most. I have never read anywhere that 1/2 prefer to scroll so extensively. That sound more anecdotal than factual. If you prefer it, by all means leave it.

The fly-in pop-in, drop down - - whatever it is called is very annoying. I typically leave any site with such a feature.

Good luck with the site and the sales of the CDs, Dave

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (9/12/2003 7:43:01)

Thank you Dave - I better take an extra look at that...

All the best

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (9/12/2003 8:14:17)

Hello again...

I just checked a few websites, such as:
www.mailloop.com
www.instantsalesletters.com
www.pushbuttonletters.com
www.webcopysecrets.com

They are all much longer than mine (at least when I count words and lines).
I expect that these guys have a reason to choose long copy.

Maybe it depends on the subject and the purpose of your website??

I better do some testing on this one myself... sometime :-))

Halina

Yes they are longer. I don't assume they are successful websites or effective presentation merely because they exist on the web.

I don't believe so. I find that sites such as you linked are inappropriate. I read about 3/4 of a typed page, see that they have no interest in helping me navigate to what I am interested in, and I leave.

To me, a metaphor would be a car rental when I go to Denmark. When I go to the counter, the clerk will give me a key and a map. If they withheld the map, I would be forced to drive wherever the spirit led since there were no people to ask directions to. Soon, I would just quit.

I am merely sharing what I have read and what I personally experience. If you believe the sites that you list are effective, follow their approach. Dave

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (9/12/2003 9:08:07)

Hi again Dave

If success is measured in terms of being well known (in their field) or earning a lot of money or being recommended by other successful people (in their field) these are all very successful sites.

What I have concluded from this discussion is that I want to make different "doors", inviting different kinds of visitors. People are very, very different indeed - some of them do prefer to drive wherever the spirit leads [:)]!

Thank you for sharing your views!

I don't understand your point, the page was so long I lost interest and didn't read it.[:D][:D]

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (9/12/2003 14:10:14)

I did! [;)]
And I understand yours too - even if it's very short! [:D]

Flex -> RE: Feedback please... (9/16/2003 4:24:11)

Halina:

Since the site is basically one page (with outside links). I would create anchors on the top of the page somewhere that will link to portions of your page if the information they're looking for is at the bottom or midway.

sity -> RE: Feedback please... (9/17/2003 0:17:48)

Hey Halina,

I think the site has potential, but needs to be broken up into more pages, or compacted some how.

Believe me, your audience will enjoy your site much more in a more compact manner. Here is a DEMO site I have created for a local band. Actually, I'm about to create a post just for it in a second. People like small, simple, and on the screen (or at least most I think).

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (9/17/2003 2:58:18)

As I said before, I do not believe there is one solution that fits all kinds of people.
Some like it short. Some like it long.
Some prefer plain information. Some need lots of emotion.
Etc. Etc. Etc.
It depends on who they are and why they visit your site and in what state of mind they might be when they come, and what kind of communication you want to create.
It depends on if they're male or female, young or old, rich or not so rich...

That's the challenge I think... to remember this and to make the right choices...

Thank you all for the feedback and the inspiration!

The thing is, as most people contributing to this thread have advised you, the vast majority of users prefer lots of small pages to big long ones.

So by sticking to the one long page format you are reducing your potential sales considerably.

I strongly advise you to change it, why target a minority when you can target the majority?[;)]

Where exactly do you have this information from?

quote:

How do you know how many of our potential customers prefer short or long pages?
And what if the long pages turn many more visitors into customers than the short pages?

Look, I do hear all the feedback I get, and I appreciate it.
Until I have done some testing myself I'll have to lean on what I learn from other people, and by all means, that includes both you and all the other honored participants in this discussion.
But it does not exclude other opinions.
Such as this:
http://www.webcopywritinguniversity.com/
This page is 3 times the length of my page!

I could go on and on, bringing you links from extremely successful marketers and their extremely long webpages.
I believe they choose it because their testing shows that's the best way to promote their products.

I don't know yet what's the right way to promote our products, and - forgive me for saying so - neither do you.
Testing and time will show.

I really appreciate all the feedback I receive.

Thanks!

Donkey -> RE: Feedback please... (9/18/2003 3:59:35)

Of course you must do what you feel is best, if you are sure that you are right stick with it and good luck to you.

Where exactly do you have this information from?

I'm no expert at on-line marketing but I try and learn from those who are. If you do a google search on the subject of bad web site design, big long pages are almost universally condemmed by the experts for the reasons given above.

Also as a user my "gut-feeling" is that this is right.

I don't know yet what's the right way to promote our products, and - forgive me for saying so - neither do you.

Quite right the "proof of the pudding is in the eating", but as an "old fart" with over 30 years experience in Marketing across a wide range of product areas, I would caution you to use market research where it is available as a basis for this sort of decision making, and I refer you to my comment above.

My apologies for labouring the point on this somewhat, and I hope you are not offended[;)]. That said I will refrain for making any further comment on this subject. Please understand that I was only trying to help, but as I said above you must do what you feel is right.

Peter

Hi

I just added a short overview in the beginning of my very long page...
Does it help?

Thank you -

Halina

Not really, it just drops me somewhere down the page leaving me scrolling about looking for the link back to the top.

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (10/2/2003 12:06:08)

Thank you both for a quick reply!

Where do you expect the back to top link?
I'm asking because there are five of them on the page - but apparently they are too hard too find?

Donkey -> RE: Feedback please... (10/2/2003 14:08:02)

I just used the back button

Same thing, the point being there was no nav structure readily available. I really didn't want to keep going back to the top to check out another section.[;)]

No, not especially but I did have to look for it.[:-]

Halina -> RE: Feedback please... (10/2/2003 14:56:54)

OK, thanks for letting me know
