_gail -> 3 columns in a table - 3 cells or two tables (9/11/2003 17:28:14)

A very basic question but one I never really thought about before. Any opinions about which is better for a three column table?

1- one table with three cells

OR

2- one table with two cells, with the right cell containing a nested table with two cells.

The three will be used as follows:

- Left sidebar for links

- Main content (the largest area)

- Right sidebar (to be about the same size as the left sidebar).

The right and left sidebars will contain 1-3 stacked tables.

thanks, gail

When doing that with tables and looking at a design in percentages I usually make a 3 cell wide table, with the right and left columns either fixed width or in percentages and with a nested table (actually sometimes stacked nested tables) centered in the middle cell and about 90% of its width.

That pulls the content away from the edges at all sizes.

However the way you say also works.

I think it largely depends on the way you want it to look. There are loads of different ways of acheiving the same result and one is not necessarily better than the other, just different.

Of course with CSS you would...............[8D]

First, thank you!

Your point raises another question. How do you decide when to use a fixed width tables for a site OR design in percentages? Some pages, particularly the home page, will only have a little bit of content which generally looks pretty crummy resolutions over 800 X 600. The majority of pages will have a good deal of content which won't look as bad when stretched across a monitor.

It really depends on the look you want.
If you want everything to always stay in the same place use fixed.
