Just What Did It - 9/13/2003 9:00:41
I completed and launched a 'site map' and got listed in http://dmoz.org simultaneously (took ~ 11 weeks and two requests). Since then, logs show that Google is coming back about every three days (prior to this it was ~ every three weeks.) Other search engines have also appeared much more frequently.

Ques 1: Is either of these events causative or is it merely coincidence?
Ques 2: If causative, your experience in which one might be responsible? Curious, that's all. I am a novice and would like to add it to the learnings.

Finally, I am asking for suggestions please. Here is my site map:

http://sidewalkmystic.com/SiteMap.htm

For me, it just 'sits there.' The page functions but it does nothing for me. Maybe that is all a site map is to do but if you have suggestions or have your own site map that would offer me more creative ideas, I would welcome them.

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave

So you're the one hogging the googlebot !

Q1. I'd go for Coincidence plus Causative. 11 weeks seems to be about it with DMOZ, just depends on if you have a diligent editor in your section.
I'm not sure when the last DMOZ site dump was obtained by Google, but they use it as do other engines for that "human " touch, and it can have a bearing on your search results.

Now I'd recommend searching here www.google-dance.com and writing down your search terms and your ranking, before the nextbig update (if there ever is to be such a thing again)
(Sorry, I lost interest in the Google Update Hype a few months back, and think it may almost be a thing of the past).
This way you will know what is working for you.

But have a look at position of your site map. On every page, so if spidered, it gets spidered again & again. Now you just need to "feed" it with new updated info on pages.
I'd add a better meta title to it for starters.

Also do you have decent maps on your site (couldn't find one easily) I find I get alot of hits for a map on my site, and gain viewers that way.

Cheers from the Outback

Mate,

Not sure what your mean with 'map' on my site. Here are two things that I do:

On every page header, to the right edge is 'Site Map'. This is merely a link to the side map. Example:

http://sidewalkmystic.com

While you are there, look at the 'quik-hits' section. Is this a 'map' similar to what you are suggesting? Maybe this 'quik-hit' belongs on every page, not just the home-page?

Thoughts and thanks, Dave

Hi Garry,

I looked at your site and then remembered you. I love the waterfalls pic.

Re: 'decent maps on your site.' The page I link above in the first post is my site map. It must be bad if you are asking me 'where is your map, because I couldn't find one easily.'

I link it on the header, every page, hyperlinked "site map."

Dave

Yes, they were the maps I meant (Ye old map & compass type of map). What I find is that some sites do not do it right and if you have a decent map on site, it can bea great asset.

Maybe your link could be called "map of hondouras" (as a key word phrase)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, that kind of map.

Yes, I have a link to it on the home page under the quick hits labeled 'Map of Honduras' (added the 'of Honduras) and added a Map of Honduras hyperlink to take the visitor to that section.

Thanks for those suggestions, Dave
