Publishing and global.asa - 9/14/2003 17:40:03
I'm afraid I've banged my shin against that dark object called global.asa. I completely reinstalled Win2k and all Office 2K applications, including IIS 5.0, server ext. 2002. But, of course I tried to cheat the system by copying my old user folders into the new user profile. Here WAS the problem: when I connected FP to a remote site and published it to my local server (http://myserver), I could only view .htm pages on the local server in IE. The .asp pages would just spin and spin. After extensive research and trials, I suspected that the global.asa file was the problem. I imported all the files except global.asa from the remote web to a local web and everything works great, including Spooky login. The problem now is that I am afraid to make changes to the web on the local server and publish it to the remote server for fear of messing it up, since my new local web has no global.asa file. Other information: generally, I have abandoned DRW and use a DSN to connect to the Access DB using ASP. Also, the DB on both the local and remote servers is located in a folder outside the web, for security. What do you think, guys, am I safe to make changes to the local web and publish them to the remote server without breaking the application???

Why don't you make a safety copy of the global.asa that's on your web server. You can then put it back if you inadvertently cause other problems when you publish from your local copy. Actually, if it was me I'd probably publish my entire hosted web back to a different local web for safekeeping before I started republishing things, that way you'll have a complete backup.

Okay, thanks. That's a good suggestion. I'm mainly wondering if I need a global.asa, even though I don't have an fpdb folder and I only connect to the DB using a system DSN. I don't really use application variables, but I think Spooky might.

I have a file called global.asa in my web....do I need it there? I dont have any databases or anything. what does global.asa do? I wonder if that could be the reason fp can't connect to the host server. bruce

Frontpage will create a global.asa file if you import a database and answer yes to the create a new connection question.
