I spotted a post in another section from "Gil" about frames pages using Opera. Does this mean you have Opera? If so could you have a quick look at my site and let me know if it looks okay in Opera? I know I can download a trial of Opera but I've got a new "clean" PC - does it cause any conflicts with anythings else? Thanks to everyone for looking. Oh Goober - Ouch! Thanks for letting me know - funnily enough I reduced the file size of the picture on the start page at lunchtime (six hours ago) so if you wouldn't mind having another look and letting me know if it has speeded up. Ehm..... just wanted to tell you that your page loads really fast with cable! Just a tiny second! BTW, your site is without a doubt one of the best FP pages I have ever seen. Did you make those graphics in PhotoShop? [This message has been edited by AnaMorph0s\|s (edited 04-08-2001).]

Everyone - thanks so much for the feedback. When I look at the page the descriptive words load first, the flag second and the nav bar last. Is this the same order for you guys? Shall I try and reduce the flag file size even more - I can see the image is starting to degrade... AnaMorph0s\|s - cable... always on connection? Oh jealous heart! What I would give - never mind... Thanks for the very complimentary words about the site graphics. I would love to take the credit but I'm honest so I can't. I know the look I want for my sites but graphics aren't really my forte - I prefer the building / programming side. So I buy my web templates from the professionals. They have good ones here (!) but the one for this site was from Pixel Mill (http://www.pixelmill.net) by a guy called John Gault. Post note: I have this morning discovered that if I save the flag as a JPEG instead of a GIF AND resize it down to 400w instead of 545w it will reduce the file size from 45.1kb which it started as down to 13kb which seems much more reasonable! I'm at work so I can't upload it now - but if I let you know later - will you go and have another look for me please? Also - do the graphics on the inner pages download fast enough? in FP2000 there is a little 'area' on the bottom bar [estimated time to download] and you can select: 14.4, 28.8, 56.6, ISDN, T1 and T3 I leave mine set at 28.8k with occassional flips into 56.6k to see how I'm doing ... other than that, an empty of your cache and a re-surf to your own site is a handy way of checking things are working okay neat site by the way! although the first page seems a little out of feel with the rest of the site, is this a non-frames entry page to launch into a framed site? Thanks guys for all your help. The first page came with the theme as a "splash page". I have been slightly concerned looking at my web logs that visitors are viewing the first page and then just going away [ ] ! Although this seems to be happening less over the last few days since I cut down the image size. I will be updating it today with more information on what the rest of the site is actually about. If this page still seems to be causing a problem I might dump it altogther! The rest of the site is not framed - been there, done that, don't want to do it again ! Only joking! Last couple of days been having trouble with an include page and NS, but that's another thread... yep - I'd bin the first page, not as pretty as the ones inside - and for me it just doesn't fit! Thanks for the responses - I'm fairly convinced that I want to bin the splash page, but what I would like to do is... ...overwrite it with the same template as the rest of the site uses and fill the middle bit with all the stuff that explains what the web site is about. BUT before I do that - how fast do the other pages load, i.e. am I going to make my first page even slower if I use the same template (eagle, statue, etc). So, if you're not all completely fed up with me, perhaps someone could tell me if the inner pages load quickly enough with the graphics they contain (I would be inclined to choose one of the non-asp pages - basically any of them except "news"). This is from a 56.6k modem on a rainy Friday afternoon during the Easter holiday (lots of kids slowing the net down). Is it possible to colour in the text on the tabs marking the section you are in? Okay - I think I'm probably going to go with the same theme for the 'splash' page and ditch the current one. As for the top tab - not sure about that one - I'll have to experiment. BUT I had a complaint (!) when the web site first went live that one of my regular visitors on the old site preferred "the list of big buttons down the left hand side" - it listed all of the main pages, whereas in the new one it uses nav bars (child under home, same level, child, etc). I think that having all the main links available probably helps my visitors, who are more used to being covered in grease under a hood than surfing the 'net! So I have been developing a test page for the links, but I had great problems getting it to view in NS. I think I've sorted it now, so I'll upload it as a test page and post the URL and perhaps all you patient people will let mw know whether you think it's better than the nav bars - that way it's less important what section you're in. I also think the nav bars slow down the loading, whereas my links page will be a single "include" and therefore should cache and speed thing up... I'll post the URL soon! The url is http://www.americanautosdirectory.co.uk/default.htm (I have changed this to default now as the thing is live but some people are still looking for it) You should see a new navigation list down the left hand side (once you click on any of the links it will revert to the normal navigation as this is just for testing). If you do have a look, can you please make a note of how long the page takes to finish downloading, as well as whether the new navigation is better. Thanks - and BTW I notice this post has developed "flames" - does that mean I'm a "flaming nuisance"? The first page took almost 20 seconds to load and the next took about 10, probably because some of the graphics were already cached. I really don't think there's enough difference in load time to worry about. You're down to personal preference and the needs of your audience. Sandy ------------------ www.alleghenyweb.com
