What's reasonable for SEO? - 9/15/2003 22:58:51
I recently contacted an SEO firm as they offered a free analysis and estimate on what it would take to "optimize" my site. Well, needless to say, it was eye opening. They presented me with three options, ranging from $1,500 to $4,500! Is it me or is this high?

I think it depends on what your selling. How competitive is the market? How *profitable* is the market? What are your current SE rankings? How much would it be worth to be ranked within the top 5? For now, Google is the game to play. Consistant rankings in the top 5 are hard to come by. It seems like Google is trying out different algos throughout the month. Even still, when I am in the top 3, I easily see double the sales compared to when I fall to 6, 7 or 8. I would start by asking them for a list of references ( a short portfolio).

SEO can be very, very time consuming if it is to be done thoroughly, consistently and well. It also requires a fair investment of time on the part of those working in the field in keeping up-to-date on what is happening, as it can change so often and so quickly. Given that I can easily see how those sort of quotes can be justified. That said I would not only ask for references, I would also ask for quotes for similar work from a couple of other sources before investing any money. You need to really trust and have a good relationship with someone who is doing SEO on your site.

No, the prices quoted are not high, they are par for the course. My typical SEO/SEM campaigns start at $3,500 and go up from there. Why? Because I usually have to rebuild entire sites from the ground up as no consideration was given by the designer during the development stages. I end up renaming files, reorganizing directory structure, incorporating css, js and a host of other goodies including html/xhtml validation and css validation. I think about the user first and the search engines follow naturally (those free ones that are left, mainly Google). If you build a site using the guidelines set forth for usability, you've covered 95% of your search engine issues. The other 5% shall remain a secret! ;)

Simple and easy to understand would be an added plus Hehehe, unfortunately in this case, simple and easy to understand may not be applicable. I've learned through using the information at the W3C, WAI and WCAG which are all W3 properties. I've also used information sites like Bobby, cynthiasays and Section 508. CSS has helped considerably as I've been able to take complete control over the structuring and positioning of my html/xhtml. The easiest part of it all, was learning html. Once you understand what each element does and how it relates to the structure of the page and user experience, you've graduated into the usability world. I think the easiest thing for me in the learning curve, was building a site and running it through the various usability validators that are out there like the one at Bobby. As you go through and correct each of the warnings/errors, it will all begin to gel at some point and you'll find yourself designing naturally from a usability standpoint.

Sometimes I read info on the web and it gives me an Excedrin Headache number E=mC2. The first article I ever had published was sent back at me by the editor. "You know what you're talking about, but will others?" was the question posed to me. gail
