I've just been to the home page. It looks great but it loads slowly on a dial-up and the links are REALLY hard to read, almost impossible actually.

Thank you Mystic for your candid response. I know it loads rather slowly, but figure it's ok because it is not a commercial site and anyone that finds it through a search engine will be interested enough in the subjects to stick around. I am a bit perplexed by your not being able to see the links...they are green on gray unless you didn't let it load all the way, then the green background of the under table shows and it is green against green. If you did let it load all the way then there must be something wrong that I cannot see. I can see them fine in IE and Netscape.

Again thank you for your expertise and time to take a look.

I can see them with no problem. Just nearly impossible to read. Maybe bold the links like the heading is.

As far as loading slowly...well, don't bet on people staying around. I mean you're site isn't the only one on the subject. I assume you're not making any money, so visits aren't really that important, but if you feel that way why did you take the time to even make the site?

I got to look around some more and here are some other things I noticed:

The Aurora pictures, in my opinion, would look better one a lighter background also not beveled, but that's just my opinion. They are really nice pictures and the dark background doesn't let the colors "pop" put like they should.

On the links, I would, again in my opinion, explain some of the vague links. Like rockhounders.com, personally, that means nothing to me and without a description there is no way in Heck I'll visit the site. You also have The Golden Optimist twice, but the links go to two different pages, I would rename one of them or put them together and explain what and why there are two.

I've noticed that none of your pages use the same background or colors. It's common to keep at least either the colors or background consistant. It gives a feeling of the site belonging together.

Sorry, to be so nit-picky, but I think my professors and the others here are rubbing off onto me. Keep up the good work, you have a wonderful start to what could easily be a excellent site.

Thank you again Mystic.

Some of your suggestions are excellent...for instance you know the old saw about looking at something too much and missing the most important part? I never saw the two links to the same subject, they are actually two different websites by the same author. In fact, after you said that if I did not explain what "Rockhounders.com" was there was no way you would go to it, I realized that it should not even be on the Index page, it should be on the Prospecting page. All of those liks are actually aimed at prospectors and any of them would recognise what the link was. I had thought about a short description of each link but in my lazyness , left them out. On other sites I always provide a description.

Thanks again,

Best regards,

Hi Jim,

I have to agree with Mystic, the links are hard to read - they look smart enough, just tough on the eyes that's all.

I see you have some hidden text at the top of your pages, you may be penalised for that in a few of the search engines. Talking about that, don't forget to add your meta tags and a more descriptive title for each separate page.

I think you need to add some sort of navigation within the site - a simple text menu at the top (and bottom) of each page would suffice - I would also get the pages to look a bit more standard as Mystic said.

Best of luck with it.

Cheers
Andt

I'd worry more about the green text than the gray for possible search engine problems. It's the same color as the background of the page and some search engines automatically check for this.

Besides having the graphic links on the home page, I'd suggest adding links to the descriptive text you have. ie. Aurora Borealis, hunting in Alaska, etc. - good for the search engines, but also very good to help get viewers to read through this text and click on the links to come into the site.

On the Aurora Borealis page, I'd like to see the text in size 10, not bold. It should be easier to read then (but I could be wrong ). If you break up this text into shorter sections with a photo or two for each section, it'd add more interest to both the text and the photos. Re-doing the photos without the bevels would also be good.

Lots of great content here! Be sure to submit the separate sections to www.dmoz.org . If you are interested in being an editor there, find a category you are interested in and apply.
