Questions about exchanging links - 9/26/2003 14:31:27
Three comments, each followed by a question. I've been told it helps in SE rankings to add plenty of links to other sites who have a related theme to your own site, and ask them reciprocate. How many link exchanges are enough? I received a request from someone to put a link on my site to their site? So I took a look and their's is a useful and attractive site, one which would certainly complement mine. They sell the same items through affiliates like I do. Isn't it counter productive to link to a site that competes with your own regarding items you sell? Also, regarding using ads from affiliates: Do you suggest setting the link to open in a new window or not, and what is your rationale? thanks, gail

Gail, I recently was faced with many of these questions. In fact, in you look back under my name in the SEO forum, you will probably find a thread or two on some of these subjects. Currently, I am trying to "get linked." There are two things that I have been very careful about: One, sticking to sites that are thematically connected to mine. This is a little tough because I sell many types of products. So I don't have a single theme, which is a significant drawback; And two, I have tried to stick to sites that have at least a PR of 4. Maybe someone can confirm that I am on the right track. Now I too am concerned about linking with the competition. What I try to do is find sites that are on theme, but don't sell products--or my products. A hypothetical example: I sell widgets, so I try to link to widget clubs, information sites, organizations, and directories. Only, of course, those with a decent PR. Mike R

Determining if a site WILL obtain a high PR is also important. Just because the site has a low or no PR today doesn't mean in 6 months it will still be the same. The game in this situation is to figure out which sites will and which sites won't. Brian
