_gail -> Please check with dialup connection (9/28/2003 16:20:02)

Can someone with a dialup connection mind please check the loading time of a few pages at this site? www.digicamhelp.com I checked with my dial-up connection. Pages seem to load okay but I'd like to see how it goes for others using dial-up living in other areas.

This is the first time I ever worked with affiliate ads and they seem to add "weight" to pages according to load times given by FrontPage.

thanks, gail

OK, Micah, funny!

So nobody at OutFront has dialup? We should still be caring about it shouldn't we?!

gail

PS, sooooo good to have you back and being your funny 'ole self!

you're right, we should care about dial up. One of the things that seems to always crop up in site critiques is load times.

Maybe this conversation will bump the post back up so someone with dial up can get involved in the post [:)]

Hi Gail,

A webmaster, when I posed this same question to him (I too am on high speed so never know how my pages are doing), suggested using one of the many speed-check sites out there (I didn't know they existed at the time):

http://www.hitboxcentral.com/index.php?sid=tools&cntid=sitedoctor

His point to me was that dial-up speeds vary so, from time of day, from connection to connection. He said most of the site speed-checkers will give you good approximate speeds and are the easiest approach when faced with the task of assessing dial-up download times.

FWIW, Dave

This seems like a very useful site. Thank you.

gail

btw, I hope their rating system is better in other areas than for spelling. I have to respectfully disagree with an "excellent rating" for a page they say contains seven misspelled words. [:o]

Hi _gail, you might want to try at Doctor HTML too. It's one page at a time but it provides a pretty good report.

Do I sense a retired educator?<grins>

I think they are reaching for the best application of subjective terms to categorize groups. "Excellent" is a subjective term that might equate to a "2" on a scale of 1-5, if memory serves me. I also believe they build in a 'fluff' factor in that their dictionary is not exhaustive. Many less commonly used words aren't in their dictionary. I know that every time I use a Spanish word on my site, I get 'dinged' according to them.

PS. I too am a stickler for misspellings. Somehow, though, they invariably seem to creep into my work, regardless of my spell-checking, my proofing, and my wife's proofing.

Then, I get the site posted to the web and there, the misspelling seems to be lit up on a neon banner. Know the feeling? Dave

Mike, Have you ever tried their 'squished html'?

Curious, they said they could reduce mine by ~9%. My assumption is that that is FP code bloat although I don't know enough to conclude that. Dave

lol, yup!

Believe me, I'm far from the best speller in the world it was nice being told I was "excellent." [;)]
