CruiseDude -> Banner Ad Serving Software and Companies (9/30/2003 14:21:18)

Hi, I am new to the forum and need some input. I am thinking about taking one of my sites (www.CruiseReviews.com) commercial and know that I need some technology to serve up banner ads. The site averages about 1.5 million page views per month and would attract major cruise companies that want detailed reporting. Do you have any suggestions for software or companies that can serve the banner ads?

Thanks for your help and knowledge, and thank you Thomas for making this forum and question possible.

Tom

Here are some that I've seen before, but I must admit that I have not used them.

Stay away from CentralAd. When I had a problem, I couldn't any response from them.

I use AdBulter for one portion of my site and am satisfied. I believe they take 7.5% of all impressions for personal use.

Just my two cents. My site is in the same ballpark as yours regarding pages. Selling banner ads to increase revenue is a tough road to go down. I converted all my banner ads to Google AdSense. I won't get rich off of it but it is more than I made in a month from selling banner ads. Just food for thought.

Amen to that. I ran a site a few years ago that was extremely well-targeted and visible, had 50K pageviews per month and click-through rates of 2%. At first we got $80 per 1000 views, but banner rates dropped to $40, $30...

The main issues for me are customer understanding, selling costs, and inventory. Too few customers understand what banners are, what rotation means, or how to evaluate their ROI. Selling costs end up being very high because you can go through a lot of effort to reach an agreement on 5000 views, but that might only be worth $100. On top of that, if you have 50K pageviews, your total inventory is limited.

Banners related to affiliate programs (per click, per sale) are just as difficult. I've never been involved in an affiliate program that paid for the time I took to set it up.

So what's the solution? Get involved in the actual sales process. In our case, we figured that what our customers wanted were pre-qualified sales leads. We captured the visitors' information and requirements and sent it by email to them, with a charge per lead. Unfortunately, processing hundreds of leads requires time or programming.

In the end, I sold the site and took the lessons and moved on.

I have to concur with the recommendation for Google's Adsense. I've been running it for almost a month now.

My site runs about 5,000 page impressions a day, and my clickthrough rate is running 1-2%. I'm making about $15 a day from Google's Adsense -- with NO effort on my part...

Plus, you don't get annoying, clashing, flashing banners and such -- everything is just text....

If your server supports ASP, and you're comfortable with a bit of coding, you might take a look at AdMentor. It's a free ad server app that lets you setup customer accounts so they can see the impressions and every click.

It's not the fanciest, but it does offer a lot for free. You can define different farms, restrict campaigns to a specific date range and/or impression or click count. It supports either MS Access or MS SQL Server for the backend. Much more. I use it on my web site and I'm very happy with it.

On the other end of the spectrum (at least in terms of cost) there's AdServer (from the folks at FastClick). I haven't used it myself, but the FastClick network runs on the technology, so I'd say it must be pretty good.

WOW! Thanks for all the knowledge and resources. I just spent an hour reading the tutorial (thanks Thomas) and now have a much better idea about what I am looking at. I will follow each link and try to absorb all I can.

I wasn't aware of Google's AdSense, and it sounds like a very viable option. Does each page in the web need to be modified to accept Google ads? How do they determine what is paid per click through. Is Google looking for exclusivity, or can one still publish none Google banner ads?

Thank you so much for your help. I hope I can reciprocate sometime.

Tom

hzarabet -> RE: Banner Ad Serving Software and Companies (10/1/2003 13:20:56)

Yes each page need to be modified for Adsense. I use an include.

Payment rates vary. I couldn't get a straight answer from Google, but I can make a car payment off of it! (Albeit a 7 year old Miata!)

I would think if you had a banner rotator you could use Adsense and your own ads.

Thomas Brunt -> RE: Banner Ad Serving Software and Companies (10/1/2003 15:52:07)

Luckily for you, CruiseDude, a sharp Web developer created your custom site template with with include pages so that you probably only have to modify 1 file to integrate Adsense throughout your site. [:D]

CruiseDude -> RE: Banner Ad Serving Software and Companies (10/3/2003 20:46:09)

Thomas, that was about the easiest money I have ever made. I started with AdSense yesterday (and thanks for making it so easy to load the code) and I am bucks up today. Thanks to everyone that responded.

Well, it is just over a month since you folks gave me the advice about Google's AdSense and I wanted to share that it has been one of the most lucrative things I have ever done without exerting any effort whatsoever.

Thanks for everyone's help and thank you Thomas for leading me in the right direction.
