Netscape vs IE - 5/4/2001 14:23:00
I just received a very aweful email from who know who that completely slammed my web site and the html code.

They said they viewed it in Netscape 4.7 with a 17" monitor set at 800x600. They said scrolling both directions was horrible and my tables were atrocious.

Looking at it in IE at the same resolution in the same size monitor....looked fine.

Is this some Netscape thing or is it some crazy person with a different agenda?

Thanks.

I see a lot of nested tables - 100% inside a 90% table, netscape handles nested table % strange.

Hi Rayne,

It's probably best to have a look in NN - it has to be said there is a fair amount of scrolling - not saying that it's right for anyone to get uptight about it but it's always a good idea to check in other browsers while you're developing a site.

I didn't have time to check it thoroughly but I would make a guess at your poll throwing everything over to the right.

Cheers
Andy

Yes, the poll might have something to do with it. I'm in the process of redoing the site--moving it over to asp from php. But I was just shocked that this person had the nerve to send me such a bashing email. Of course, this person did not leave a name.

No one has ever even commented that it looked off. And all of a sudden I get slammed. I was just shocked.

Thanks for the feedback. I will be closely watching my site in this new redo.

Due to recent upgrades on the RayneCountry site, NN users that have a serious attitude problem should consider:

1) Changing their resolution to HIGHER than 800x600, regardless of the monitor size.

2) Politely notify the webmaster that they'd prefer to be able to see this site without the horizontal scroll bar while using 800x600 resolution.

or

3) Volunteer to "fix" the coding of the page to help make the net experience more enjoyable for all users, including those cruising around looking at code. At no charge, of course, as we are all a part of this wonderful community spirit.

<sidenote to Rayne> -- don't forget to invite him to the Outfront forums -- we'd love to "educate" him for you </sidenote>

I see side scrolling on the home page only.
The nerve of some people...unbelievable.

I looked @ it using opera and ie 5.5 & here were the good points:

It loaded nice and quickly - this is the most important criterion I use.

It looked more than fine to me :-) The scroll bar? - So what!

It's obviously carefully designed and planned.

Well thought out and crisp navigation.

As for your "flamer" well sadly there are a lot of 'em out their. If someone chooses to display their ignorance in every sense of the word that's a sign of their inadequacy not of yours.

Bad points - none.

I do have a suggestion 'though your welcome message could be a little more punchy.

"Welcome to Rayne Country
Started back in March of 1999, RayneCountry went from having a few song lyrics on a free web server to what it is today with over 300 song lyrics and its own domain. More songs are added continously and I hope you keep enjoy your visit and keep coming back."

Is fine it gets the message across but maybe
somthing like " Welcome to Rayne County Back in 1999 I had the idea that a site doing ... "

and go on from there what I'm trying to say is that as its an enthusiast site somthing that lets your visitor know that you're as enthusiatic as they are about and that there are a lot of people with the same taste ....

Hope all this helps.

Rayne,

Just so you know, I viewed your site in IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.75 on a 17" screen at 800X600 resolution and 32bit color. I DID NOT get a horizontal scroll! Not sure I would take what this person says seriously.

I did notice one thing that may be a typo. On your webrings page there is a semicolon ( on the top just to the left of your logo. I noticed it because it loaded before the rest of the page. I only saw this on this one page.

In case you are wondering about the smiley face. Not sure why but it was inserted in my post when I tried to type in a semicolon in parentheses.

Thanks for the info about the smilies! Guess I wont try typing it like that again. On the other hand the wink is kind of cute. Just didn't fit the message.

If you don't want the smiley, check the box "Disable Smilies" when replying. ;)

Got it. Just never take the time to put smilies. Looked at Smilies Legend to side of this posting window and found out how they work.
