How do I stream audio in Frontpage? I don't want people to download the audio I just want it to be streamed...Hifi and Lofi

Depends on whether you're streaming Windows Meda, Real Audio, or MP3 content, although thy're all along the same lines. You can find the info for the first two on MS's and Real's site by doing a search. A lot of detailed stuff there, but a fairly simple process to get you up and running.

As for MP3s, you would upload your MP3 file to the server. Then create a file with NotePad to create a file that has a pointer to the MP3 file (for example, http://www.yousite.com/groovy.mp3) and save it with a .M3U extension. Upload that file and then link to it from a page. This will allow your media to stream rather than download.

Not sure how much clearer I can get, but I'll give it a go.....[;)]

Take the MP3 you want to stream (say, "SureKnowSomething.mp3") and upload it to the server. Now, open Notepad and create a line that points to it (write, "http://www.yoursite.com/SureKnowSomething.mp3" (w/o the quotes)). Save that NotePad file as, for example, "Something.m3u." Make sure that the extension is m3u and not txt. Upload that file to your server.

When you link to it from your web site, link to the "Something.m3u" and not the mp3 itself. This will ensure it streams, rather than downloads.

Web link to the M3U that calls the MP3.

Thanks for that tip. I'm doing a website for a band and they want audio and video, never had to deal with these before so I'm groping around a bit[sm=ask.gif]. I intend using a streaming host later on but to get it up and running I'm just going to stick a few bits on the site.

Does something similar work for video?

Not only can you get some nice quality stuff put out there, but it's free!
Also, if you don't already, grab the Windows Media Player 9 add-in for Frontpage at: http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/downloads/addin/searchdetail.asp?a=378

Now you're all set! Make sure you charge them a pretty penny for streaming audio and video! =]

audio and video stuff is a lot of fun once you feel confortable with it all. It tends to have much cutting-edge goodies that can be done and that's always exciting. Have a good time with it!

Thanks the m3u works great. Question though. Will non Windows users be able to listen to it. I have no idea what the media is on those.

I'm thinking that non-windows users would be just fine; not sure though. in the early days of MP3.com, this is how they did things.

Another question:

I need another link that only downloads and does not play the mp3 song.

In Front Page ... the other link I have created opens the mp3 and plays (if I link it directly to the song location). If I right click, then i have the option to save , but don't want that option because I require the download to be payed for....which leads me on to the 3rd question .. how do i link download with PayPal or similar online pay sysyem

I had a few problems myself streaming audio for a friends site. The problem lies in the fact that different users have different browsers, different plug-ins and players, and could browse on a PC as well as a Mac.

This is why I thought that a Flash streamer would be a nice way to present music from your site. It does not require any other plug-in than the Macromedia Flash player (95% of users do on all systems according to Macromedia) and is presented from your host, no need for the user to go any length to hear your music. On top of that it can stream MP3s as well as SWFs overcoming some packages limitation on MP3 hosting (this does not mean you should infringe any copyright though)

If you want to check out what I came up with, here is the address www.nodecaff.com and an example is at www.jammusic.co.uk

In brief it allows you to play/stop/pause/skip tracks, play 2 different bitrates, have a visible playlist, customise the player's background etc ...

As for video, is work in process ... :-S

This is for all who want to stream music

m3u are generally known as Winamp Playlists, and will play in IE6 Media player

asx is better known with Windows Media Player and will play in any Media Player you can find (or at least it should)

ram is associated with RealOnePlayer, and works only with that.

streaming audio allows you to have more than one track on the background music. The way to cheat in making your m3u files is to use winamp (http://classic.winamp.com) and please be careful on which version you download. Winamp 2 creates the m3u playlist files, where as Winamp 3 creates b4u playlist files

Should clear a few things up
