Site critique, please - 5/8/2001 18:05:00
I've just discovered the Outfront site today, and all I can say is 'wow'!I published my personal site about 6 weeks ago, and although traffic has been good, I can't help but think it may be a little too 'vanilla', if you know what I mean. I'm a big fan of Formula1 and Jacques Villeneuve, so it's basically a fansite/news-site. The address is: http://pages.infinit.net/jacquesv I'd appreciate any feedback, suggestions or criticism as this is only the second site I've created, and I want to learn MORE!! Thank you all in advance, anne-marie

Not much to look at in opera with frames OFF This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Is there another word for synonym?"

You need content inside the <noframes> & </noframes> tags. Or an even better idea would be to get rid of the frames.------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Is there another word for synonym?"

Gil, could you be more specific, please. I thought frames were a good thing. Do you feel navigation bars are more efficient? Again, I am new at this, so I'm not really sure how many people actually use Opera as a browser, not that I mean I don't want to be accessible to as many people as possible. The frames issue aside, were you able to view the site with another browser? As a moderator, I would value your opinion.Thank you again, anne-marie [This message has been edited by anne-marie (edited 05-08-2001).]

Thank you Millie. It's nice to know I'm not totally off the track. But as a non-moderator can you please tell me why you dislike frames. I see so many sites out there with frames and I'd like to know if there is a better alternative.Thank you, anne-marie

Hi Anne-Marie,You are getting worried about these frames now eh? Well, sadly there is much to worry about. Many sites use frames, but that does not mean that they are a good thing. There are situations where frames are desirable, or even necessary, but they are few and far between. Amoung the problems they cause are: They create a barrier for many search engines looking at your pages, though you can overcome this by putting content in the 'noframes' section People cannot bookmark pages in your site, they can only bookmark the whole frameset. Those search engines that do find your pages will send people to the framed page - with the frames missing - thus you lose your navigation entirely. There is an old but good article on the subject here: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9612.html On the rest of your site - you have a well oraganised site with loads of content and it is easy to navigate. I imagine it will be of great interest to Villeneuve fans - I live with a big Grand Prix fan, he will surely love it.

Thank you, Katherine. Now I get it! I didn't realize there were so many downsides to frames. So its back to the drawing board! At least I'm having fun while I'm learning! anne-marie

Anne-Marie-As a designer I ate frames because they add a level of complexity to setting links. I always manage to screw it up! Katherine just about covered everything else! But you learned how to make them and an education is never a waste of time! Millie

PS, Make that I "hate" frames. If I "ate" frames I might become a split personality! SHEESH! too many hours at the PC. I heard a rumour the sun is shining. Maybe I should go check out this "sun" thing!

Frames are sooo tastey though Millie. I prefer the chocolate ones. The "sun" is way overrated. ------------------ Brandon's Poetry Corner "Somewhere between my brain and my fingertips." - A MysticNight original (I hope) "If there is anyone here I have not insulted, I apologize!" - Johannes Brahms
