ThomasCholipski -> Google and no description (10/7/2003 3:46:45)

I just recently got my new web site published and for the hell of it I checked google and I ranked 13th out of 400 entries. The problem my home page is a Flash movie with the only text on that page was 'enter>' and that is what appeared in the description for my URL 'thesiliconvalleyconnection'.

I do have a Title and my Keywords and Metas etc defined. I have in the mean time added some relevant text so if it crawls me again at least it will see something. However I do not want that text to appear on the actual page. Does it hurt to change that text the the same color as my background or does that send a signal that I am trying to spoof it?

The following if how I have my Tags set

<TITLE>The Silicon Valley Connection Home, Office And Business IT Consulting</TITLE>

<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">
<meta name="title" content="The Silicon Valley Connection">
<meta name="description" content="Computer Solutions and Support for the Home, Home Office and Small Business in the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area. Services include Network Design, Web Design, Accounting, Microsoft CRM, Microsoft RMS, Custom Databases and Programming Solutions.">

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content=";http:\\">
<meta name="language" content="en">
<meta name="robots" content="all,follow">
<meta name="rating" content="general">

and the following is the text I added to my home page

Computer Solutions and Support for the Home, Home Office and Small Business in the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area. Services include Network Design, Web Design, Accounting, Microsoft CRM, Microsoft RMS, Custom Databases and Programming Solutions.

Any Comments?

Thanks,

Tom

They will toss you out for this. Very well documented.

I guess the question still is???

After I have added keywords and text to my Flash movie Home Page as documented above, what does google pickup as the description they use in their 'Results Ranking'?

Do they use 'Title', 'Description' or text from the page? This would help to know to make that section as concise as possible.

Also how often do they crawl the site again or is that in the hands of the google gods??

Thanks again.

You may want to try this.

Cooper,

Thanks, I took a look at the article, but it leads me to believe that 'Reflect' is correct. Trying to spoof the major engines is not going to work. Even the people in the article know about that trick for Flash movies.

I guess for the immediate future I will move the searchable text out of the immediate viewing range of the consumer until a better solution can be found.

Thanks again,

Also, don't knock yourself out trying to tweak the keywords meta tag too much, according to what I've read. Only Inktomi supports it now.
