FrontPage File Permissions - 10/7/2003 20:54:56
Hi
Can anyone please tell me how to check/change file permissions? Everytime I try to open a page on a website I've already published, it says "the server extensions were unable to access the file. please check file permissions". This started yesterday afternoon, although it was working fine yesterday morning. I checked the help files, and it said something about clicking on "tools" then "server", but "server" is greyed out. If anyone could help I sure would appreciate it, I really don't know what to do.:)

When you are trying to change the file permissions, are you attempting to change them on the server? You would need to go to file - open web - http://www.yourdomain.com

If you are still having problems, your FP extensions could be corrupt. Contact your hosting company to ask them to re-install them.

Thank you-

When you say nothing happens, does it ask you for a user name / password if you have just opened up FP? What does it say in the very upper left hand corner, something like Microsoft Frontpage - http:///www.yourdomain.com ? If so - you have opened the web up, you just need to activate the folder list.

If not - the only other way would be thru your hosting control panel or contact you host company.

Hi
When I click on "tools", "web setting", it says "no server currently in use"-could that be the problem, and if so, would anyone know what I could do?
Thank you so much-

It does not like you have your http://www.yourdomain.com open. You need to have this open. When you go to file - open web & enter http://www.yourdomain.com & open, you say nothing happens? What does it say @ the very top left hand corner?

Now sorry I missed this in your message. Once you have that opened, right click on the folder that you wish to change the permissions of & choose properties. Here you will be able to review your folder permissions.

Do you mean where it says "allow scripts or programs to be run" and those things, (that's what it says when I click on a file such as "_fpclass" or "_private", but those options are grayed out...). When I click on properties in one of the published page folders, such as "About Us", there are 3 tabs that say "General", "summary", and "workgroup". I'm lost.

Yes.. But you are still working locally. You cannot change your file permissions locally. You have to be signed onto your server.

What does it say in the very upper left hand corner, something like Microsoft Frontpage - http:///www.yourdomain.com when you go to file - open web & enter http://www.yourdomain.com & open

The means you are not on the server.

Please try to do this & see what it says:
go to file - open web & enter http://www.yourdomain.com & open

At what point did you get this error? When you opened the web or when you tried to change the file permissions?

I take you were able to open http://www.yourdomain.com ???

Are you on a UNIX or a Windows platform?

:)

Seems you need to contact your hosting company to have them re-install the FP extensions.

RE: FrontPage File Permissions - 10/11/2003 11:15:14
Well, the web host said the extensions didn't appear to have anything wrong with them but re installed them anyway. But I'm still having the same problem.
:) I'm looking at the frontpage server administrator thing and I may be wrong, but I think I may be onto something here…maybe you can help? Ok, here's what's going on-
there's a tab that says "install frontpage server extensions for existing web server", then when I click on that it says "server type: frontpage personal web server" and then I click "ok". After that a server configuration box comes up that says: "Please enter the following information about your server configuration; click ok to continue", then it has a text box and a browse button. My question is this: what am I supposed to put in the text box? Could this have been the problem all along…?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance...

No - you are not hosting it - so you do not need extensions on your local machine. That is what you are looking at.

Go to http://news.netcraft.com & enter your domain name. There are some othr tools as well that I have to check but since I do not know your domain name - I cannot check them. See if it says you have FP extensions installed.

A lot of hosting companies are not familiar with FP extensions. Tell them you are not able to go to File - Open web - http://www.yourdomain.com - and you need to be able to do this. But then again - all of this is mute if you are on a UNIX server because you cannot change file permissions like this on UNIX.

It says: "The site www.set-the-mood.com is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000." It doesn't say anything about having FrontPage Extensions installed, but I got an e-mail from my web host last night assuring me that they were.

Try going to this page:
http://www.set-the-mood.com/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll

It should ask you for your user name / password. Here you will be able to view / check / your web server.

A lot of hosting companies will only re-install the extensions, but you should un-install the extensions & then re-install them to have it work properly.

Ok, I'll try that-I'm gonna look around in there awhile and see if I can figure something out. But how would I uninstall/reinstall the extensions?

Under server health, choose recalculate the web. And you can also check the server health.

It sounds like you might want to consider a hosting company that knows a little more about FP extensions.

Tell your host to remove the FP extensions, & then re-install them. Do you have phone support with them? If so - call them & tell them you are not able to connect to http://www.set-the-mood.com via FP and this is unacceptable. If they do not support FP extensions, they need to tell you, otherwise you expect to connect to http://www.set-the-mood.com by the time the call is over. If you have to e-mail them - give them a specific time. Otherwise, I would recommend another hosting company. I have never had as much problems connecting to a server via FP as this.

Tell your host to remove the FP extensions, & then re-install them. Tell them that you wish to speak to a manager / supervisor re: your problem & yu will be contacting billing on Monday to request a refund for the time that you have put into this.

When first starting with a new hosting company, I have seen it happen a number of times that this happens - the extensions were not installed properly.

This was my question:
"Why isn't my password working on the site administration page for "http://www.set-the-mood.com"?"
This was their response:
"I am not clear what do you mean. You user and pw working fine."
Are you believing that??

They probably did not understand. If you asked them it that way - they probably though you were speaking via browser. You would need to state FrontPage. Plus a lot of hosting companies do not know about that other hyperlink that I sent you.

You are still not able to connect to http://www.set-the-mood.com via Front page, but yet you are OK to publish. Did you create a FP form on there & does it work?

Well then FP extensions are not installed. I thought you could @ least publish. Tell them you are not able to access your site via FP. They HAVE to fix it if they are advertising on their site that they support FP extensions.
