Non-profit site - 5/23/2001 13:48:00
I would be grateful for any constructive criticism and suggestions of our non-profit site at www.seisummit.org

Is the site understandable? Do you get a quick sense of what we do? Is the navigation logical? Is the site visually appealing? Is it "professional"?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I rather like your site.

The pop-up effects are very well done. And I like that you built the homepage to fit the screen, no scrolling here!

Your list of keywords was a bit long, you might be better served by narrowing that down a bit, but if you are getting decent search engine placement why change?

Also, the logo or graphic that should be toward the top and left did not load, just a placeholder without alternate description...

Thanks!

I learned the hard way in keeping things in place--Tables are my Best Friend! :-) The first thing I do after creating a new page is to throw in the table.

I think my keywords are serving me okay, although I did take your advice and remove a few. The search engines serve me pretty well, I think, for being a locally-based site. My trouble is in getting local referrals actually--but that's another topic.

I'm frustrated about the problem you had with the top image though--I double checked the code and I have an alt tag for that image, and the code is the same for the other rollovers...scratching my head on that one.

Hi there.

You have a lot of very good information on your site.

I don't have time to study it thoroughly, but I do have a couple of quick suggestions. First, I'm not too crazy about the splash page. The slide show, though nice, takes quite a while to load. I believe if I was going to use it, I would stick to plain text navigation (to keep graphics to a minimum). The About SEI would be a good home page.

Second, using multiple themes or "looks" within a single site is an unprofessional gaffe. Sticking with one would be a big step toward improving the site.

Good luck with it!

Thanks for your suggestions!

I am in the process of redesigning the home page--I agree with your thoughts! :-)

The multiple theme thing is something I've gone back & forth on. The site is so big (relatively speaking for a nonprofit--125 pages) that having the same look for all those pages seemed incredibly monotonous. I tried for consistency in design, and have used different themes in different areas. (Thus, one program area has all its pages in one theme; another program area has all its pages in another theme, etc.)

I'm definitely interested in others' input on this, though! My goal is that people are visually "notified" when they've moved to a different program area.

What do others think?

I agree with Goober, changing themes doesn't look professional. If you want the separate programs to stand out, you could use the same theme, but modify the colors. I've seen a few sites that did this very effectivly.

Good luck!

Objections noted! :-)

Barring the theme changes, does the site have logical navigation? Do you feel you get an idea of what we do? If you were a parent, would this site answer some of your questions about education reform, even if you don't live in our area?

Thank you for your thoughts!!
