Adding Music Files to Web Page - 10/10/2003 10:43:01
I have just started building a web page using FrontPage 2000. One thing I would like to be able to do is post sound files of music I've recorded so people can download them or listen to them as streaming audio. How do I do this? Is this something I can do with FrontPage 2000? Is the 10 megs of free personal space I have on my Earthlink account enough to handle this? If not, how much do I need? Thanks. Paul Spillenger

How do I do this? Is this something I can do with FrontPage 2000? Sure, with just a tiny bit of effort... To allow downloading, just place the .mp3 or whatever format you're using into a file folder, then link to that file folder like you would any other page... when a visitor clicks there it should open a download dialogue for them. To stream check out the great tip in this thread posted by TonyT: http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m_159049/tm.htm quote:

That all depends on how many files, what size, etc. A one page web and two songs, sure... but sound files are pretty good sized, so if you're storing them on your website they'll start to add up fast! There is free software for Linux/MacOSX/Windows that allows you to stream your entire music library (or specific directory of music) over the Internet using free software that turns your home PC into a web server of sorts... The downsides are that it will only stream as fast as your connection, and you'd have to post the IP address and password on the Internet to give visitors access... it is password protected but: ** This is potentially a HUGE security risk, so use your best judgement ** The music would stream over the Internet, through the visitors default audio player... without storing files on your website. Not sure if that would work for you, but thought I'd mention it. It's intended to be used as a way to play your PC library on your home stereo, or on any PC over the web, not really to "broadcast" to the public... If you want to check it out it's called SLIMP3 Server and you can download the software free here: http://www.slimdevices.com/
