Several CSS questoins - 10/10/2003 20:22:13
A couple of questions about CSS.

1. I was looking at the demo that front page has on the new version 2003 and I didn't see anything there about CSS......and they had a lot on tables and templates and I was wondering if anyone has used the beta version of front page 2003 and knows first hand if they have style sheets?

2. I also spent a good deal of time looking at this tutorial site on CSS.
http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp and I was wondering why they built it with tables?

3. Also, I would like to view some sites that are done only with CSS but have been unable to do so to date. That Zen site that was mentioned does not seem to work on my computer as no matter what I click on it goes back to the original page.

I have a site done in CSS, if you wanted to take a look at it: www.op-otaku.com

It's just a hobby site, so it's nothing fancy, but it is done in CSS. Feel free to peek at the code. :)

Hi Chasta.....I had a peek at your page and the code. Now I have more questions :) What is the advantage of doing it this way over using a template and tables to do the same thing? I would really have a hard time creating a page without using tables as I need the grid right there in front of me on the screen to see where everything is going to go. I guess front page has turned me into a WYSIWYG dependency freak. I don't have any problem with using CSS in conjunction with tables but as a total entity.....I am light years away.

I don't know about FrontPage since I haven't used it in years, but DreamWeaver MX 2004 has a way to draw layers in it's WYSIWYG editor. Granted, this particular site of mine was hand-coded, but I just downloaded the trial version of MX 2004 and have to mention that it's really cool. :) I was also pretty happy to see it displays my CSS sites perfectly. (They're a mess in DW 4.) I'm surprised FP hasn't followed suit.

On the matter of templates, I've just finished a CSS only DW MX 2004 templates. Why create a template with CSS rather than tables? A number of reasons: smaller page size, separation of content, better for SEO (although some will argue that's not the case), better for users with disabilities, W3C compliant...

Don't get me wrong, tables are great for tabular data, but they weren't meant for design. Once you get the hang of CSS, you'll find it's not difficult.

Others do a better job explaining it all than I do though. I recommend The Layout is Dead, Long Live the Layout and A List Apart's To Hell With Bad Browsers on reasons to move to CSS for design. For techniques, check out Glish, css/edge, and BrainJar.

Hope this helps. :)
