How do I... - 5/29/2001 19:49:00
Hi again, fixed up a number of things on my site but I can't see where it's scrolling.

I've set the tables to 100%..so how come it's scrolling.
Checked the http://www.mallportal.com/babyboutique but it doesn't on my machine.
Please help, how can I stop this happening.

The width of the content is more than can fit within 800px wide. Merge the cells that hold the pictures of the girl and boy. Have this info below each other instead of next to each other, and uncheck the width on this cell to allow it to expand/contract as needed.

Great looking page. I love the pics, but the one of the boy looks like it was compressed a bit too much.

That the thing about table content :-( and ooh have I got burnt.

To see where it happens and to prevent it I have a background image that's a pixel grid.

There's a link to a great one (far far better than the one I did myself) in the current outfront newsletter.

Oh and I loved the baby boutique too btw - I was especially taken with the "soccer outfit" soccer is very popular over here and it reminded of a very similar outfit I bought for my favourite nephew when he was of the age to wear it.

Now here's another thing I do. As well as internet explorer and netscape I use opera as a browser - its *great* for testing especially as you can set it to show exactly how much space your page takes up on the screen. Linked pages zooming and so on.

Looking @ my screen now 1004:530 - useful to know.

Linking pages lets me see the result of changes immediately as well. Worried about my font size i hit a key and zoom up and down.....

It is free by the way :-)

Hope this helps :-)

Thank you, I've a 19" screen so I tend to forget, just set tables at 100% and off I go
into my fantasy of owning a huge department store
I've been re-working it and the images and I think it's coming up really well...crossed fingers, hope to have it up in the next day.
Rather the fashion portal, then more work on the baby and rest of it...sometimes I wonder what I've got myself into!
There are some gorgeous baby clothes around
did you see the little Sir Elton Jack number, so cute.

I've a copy of Opera and was going to install it but then I heard all sorts of problems with Win2000, so I held back, after I finish Mall which by the way, could be never as it needs to be updated daily, besides the fine tuning...then I may have time to see what the general consus on Opera is.
Thank you again for your suggestions, and yes I love the little soccer outfit,so many wonderful baby clothes, and the good thing is I'm selling some too, even with my glaring web design problems.

Hello again and you're *very* welcome!

It's getting better and better - please consider yourself as having been applauded. Glaring design problems? I think you're being a little harsh on yourself.

I'm delighted to hear that you're managing to get products moving - well done.

Umm sorry to do this to you but when you click on the link for the sir jason eton outfit (for example) you go here:

http://www.jordanmarie.com/wsf/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&Product_ID=240&CATID=19&AID=1937464&PID=78679

It's a little disconcerting

Have a look - what's going on is that the buttons are positioned poorly. There's a writer (Nielsen) who calls this sort of thing "mytery meat navigation" - very unkind but he calls it that to make the point.

I urge you to make heavy use of the various reports views. You'll find they're a Godsend....

Here's a suggestion:

Sit down and work out exactly what happens when someone goes to a page you've linked to. How I do it is that I put one word for each major jump on a website on a large piece of paper.

I stick those pieces of paper on the floor.

I quite literally walk through the site.

I try to anticipate where in the words of microsoft's slogan my vistors are likely to want to go today.

Try asking yourself these questions:

How do I get from adventure to baby clothes?

Do I need to open a new window so that my visitors can come back to me?

Am I assuming that my visitors are here to buy one thing and one thing only?

Even if they are maybe I can tempt them to look at other stuff ... I am a facilitator after all ....

'nuff said?

19" screen and Windows 2000.

OK first imagine a gorilla leaping up and down saying "oh no oh no oh no"

That was fun wasn't it?

You've fallen into a trap that's terribly easy to fall into. Your set up is far superior to that of most of your visitors. You need to design *down to them.*

Here's how to get out of it.

Call up the help in Front Page.
Click the Answer Wizard tab.
Type in the word - preview
Read their words of wisdom and follow the steps....

There are endless places that offer preview resolution emulators as well.

Try going here:

http://www.nonags.com to have a look to see what you can see....

Good luck and please don't "head to the keyboard" because:

a: it hurts.
b: you'll get some really weird html that way .

Hope this helps :-)

He!He! Gorilla
I think it's better, just uploaded the new pages, I've only done the baby portal and her portal, and I fixed up the link for the little boy's satin number:0 didn't know that was happening! Thank You!
And I've changed the nav system, got rid of the drop down menu.

Oh! I feel like the Mad Hatter...So much to do three portals to go and the only one I'm really looking forward to developing is the Art Portal and hardly anyone goes there!

I might shove a painting or John Williams Seville Concert CD in between a paintball gun to get their attention!
Think it would work

As for the suggestions you outlined, thank you, I do sometimes feel I'm in a muddle with so many pages and it would be far easier if I went the way of most other malls, but I want to give this a try first and so far the reaction has been quite good, so we'll see.
I'll print out every page and walk through the site, great idea instead of trying to do it in my head... could be the reason my left eye is starting to twitch..or perhaps it's the banging on the keyboard

No, only joking never bang on the keyboard, but I have been known to fall asleep on it, now there's some really strange html!

Seriously, thank you again, for your time and patience and excellent words of advice.

Grinning Greying Gaelic Gorilla Gladly Gives Gleeful Greetings

oh poot I've run out of G's .....

1st things first. Have emailed you a partial sceeen shot that I've hacked about a bit to show you what I mean about buttons.

Site is looking better and better each time I go back and have a look.

"I do sometimes feel I'm in a muddle with so many pages and it would be far easier if I went the way of most other malls, but I want to give this a try first and so far the reaction has been quite good, so we'll see."

Nils desperandum ("Don't despair" somethings just sound better in Latin. But for God's sake don't take a leaf out of "Gone with the Wind" and adopt a slogan of "Caveat Emptorium" as that particularly dignified sounding phrase translates into Enlgish as "Let the buyer beware place" NOT the slogan for you I think )

It's a very good basic concept - your design is good and more importantly unique to you.

Think about it for a mo - you're now smoothing the rough edges - but the basic work is good very good in fact. Even more importantly you're moving product so ....

Stick with it. Have you got a friend who'd be willing to test it for you? Sometimes you can be so close to somthing that you miss things.

Definitely use the navigation view and see what links to what.

Does the link to Mallportal.com work on every page for example?

Stick with it It's the last few percent of getting there that cause the most angst -because they're the fiddliest.

Let the buyer beware indeed!
Just discovered the buy (qlksrv) button isn't working all the time!

I wonder how many sales I've lost today.

I love people picking at my site it pushes me to new limits.

Linda, I think said some of the pics were over cooked, that prompted me to dust off the Adobe and tackle it rather than retreating to the safety of mircrographx, now I love it, no longer afraid of the learning curve.

You mentioned the nav, dropdown menu, pop-up
which prompted me to take stock and change hats which is greatly appreciated.

My friends bless them, think everything I do is great possibly because they don't know anything about computers or working the net.

Thanks for the shots, I can see what you mean
by the position of the button, I'll see if I can reposition it or at least make a little more buyer friendly
