Keyword Density Analysis - 10/14/2003 18:44:44
What is the best keyword density percentage to shoot for? I have read recommendations ranging from about 8% to 15%, but I can't seem to find a consensus on the subject. Also, how do you calculate that percentage? I have several keyword density analyzers that I use, but each calculates this differently. Some just look at the page as a whole, and some break down each page element (title, meta tags, body, e.g.) and assign a percentage for each.

Keyword Density A search engine will calculate the density of keywords per page using a percentage.

Example: One of your pages contains 1000 words. Among these 1000 words there are exactly 100 keyword phrases. Thus, your page yields 10% of keyword density.

This says that your page would rank higher than any page that yielded a lower keyword density percentage than 10%. Ideally, your pages should not yield such a high number. Search engines will actually penalize you if there are indeed too many keywords. The ideal number normally is around 8%.

However some people will say % should be higher. I don't think everyone is going to say x % is the exact number.

Is there a site that can tell you your keyword density?

Okay, this is scary. Are you going to get penalized for TOO MANY keywords? Because I have designed five local real estate sites, and one more in the works....all dedicated to properties around "Lake Wallenpaupack"...one of the keywords.

Naturally, the description of the properties have to have where they're located...near Lake Wallenpaupack, on lake wallenpaupack...I can't just say "Near the lake" because people from out of the area won't know where the heck that is. Some properties have lake rights to one lake, some to another...some are on the Wallenpaupack River and some are in Wallenpaupack Lake Estates community. You see where I'm going with this? Am I going to be penalized for having too much Wallenpaupack occurences? I just went thru one webpage and deleted some extra occurrances of Lake Wallenpaupack, but most of them could not be deleted without making the description be lacking.

What am I supposed to do about that???

In all honesty I have not been penalized for using extra words if it is not repeat, repeat, repeat, (like spam) However I make sure that words repeated are relevant.

However in some cases in can be considered spam. If you email me site or post link we could look at it.

If it is on a real estate site - I could see you needing to repeat words.

I'm going to make some changes on the one (like split the long page up into two pages....). When I get that done I'll post a link to it. This site has been frustrating because until a month or two ago it was doing excellent in Google, but now it hardly shows up at all. Wonder if that's why?????

One thing I am doing is removing all references to the Lake in the image alt attributes (I put it in there so that the images would be indexed under Lake Wallenpaupack, but hey. If it's going to get my client's site banned by Google then it's not worth it...)

But right now I have two children needing instruction in reading, writing, and rithmatic...LOL

Thank you all for the comments. I guess my biggest concern was, like Peppergal, making sure that I don't get penalized for spamming keywords. I never repeat words one after another, but I do use them as often as I can logically include them. I think I will start running keyword density analyses for the sites listed higher in the SERPs for certain phrases. This should give some insight into how I should tweak the ratio for my pages.

Mike
