Open the site 'live' (on the server) and PUBLISH back to your HDD

Gil Thanks for the quick response. How do I open the site live (on the server)?

Gil I have figured it out. Thanks. It is very straightforward - just [open web] and type in the URL. Am I right in thinking that I could edit the version that is on the server without copying it back to the HD?

Yes, you are right in thinking it could be done that way - however I believe most people would recommend you don't do it that way. If you happen to make a serious error, as we all do from time to time, it is right there "live" for all to see. At least when working on your HD, you can double check things, or triple check, before publishing. Secondly, you then have no backup of your site to replace it with. Nancy

RE: copying from the server - 10/16/2003 10:26:44
The plot thickens - can anyone help with the latest little problem? Originally I created a root web site and then several other ones that I published to subdomains after a slash ie www.rootweb.org and then other sites at www.rootweb.org/extra01 . I published each of the extra sites independently of the root site. The HDD crashed and I lost my original copies of the websites. I opened the website on the server and then published it to my new HDD. This worked fine except that the extra websites are now folders within the rootweb rather than being independent websites. How can I convert the folders back into stand alone websites?

You can open each of those subwebs individually, and publish to different locations on your hard drive so that they will remain separate from the root web. When you open just use the actual location - the domain, plus / plus the subweb name. When you do the root, you should have the option on the publish setting to exclude subwebs, so that you'll only have the root by itself. Nancy

Nancy Thanks again that helped a lot. There is a new wrinkle. When I try to publish the root web to my HDD I get the following message : - [The destination web ignores case. The following pairs will conflict ... No files were copied. Name all files in your web uniquely and try again] The problem is that the files mentioned are hidden away somewhere in mysterious FP folders and files (eg _overlay... ). Any ideas about how to get round this problem?

If you are publishing to a "clean" location on your hard drive (by "clean" I mean a newly created folder with nothing in it) I don't see why you would be receiving that message. Just for future reference, you should make it a habit to name your files with all lowercase and no spaces. You'll find different servers will be more friendly to you that way. Nancy

Nancy Thanks again. I tried publishing to a clean location but got the same error message. It would appear that Front Page wrote files to the server that differ only in their case which is OK on the remote server but not on my HDD. I do not quite understand this as the files on the remote server should be copies of ones which came from my old HDD in the first place. As far as I know I have entered the same software on the new HDD. So ... any other ideas about what I might try?

Nancy I figured out a work around. I went to the server using a third party FTP that allowed me to see into the _overlay folder where I renamed the two files which were potential duplicates on a non case sensitive server. I was then able to open the root web from inside FP and publish it to my HDD - just like you said. So far I have not had any problems as a result of the renaming. Thanks again
