Basketball Site Review Please - 5/31/2001 20:21:00
Hi,

Please take a look at my site and offer suggestions. It's www.hoopsking.com.

Thank you,

Chris

Well, normally I would leave as soon as I got a popup Ad window, but since it is here I closed that. Then I see I have to agree to "something" before I have any idea what it is? Sorry, I left.

Hi gil,

I am just trying to cover my butt in case someone breaks their leg doing the drills on my site.

I think Chris that you would be better off just using a disclaimer prominently positioned on each page. having to click I agree would definitely put a lot of people off. There is research that shows that if people do not see what they are looking for with 3 seconds - yes 3 seconds! - of the page load they are off. I think it was Nua Internet Surveys that I read that at.

The site itself (I did agree!):

There is a lot of stuff there and I think you are going to have to look at your use of colour to make it clearer - you need to make the headlines jump out but there is just a mass of orange stuff. Links should stand out and this shade of orange seem to make them recede instead somehow.

Adding mouseover effects to the links would help and personally I feel that the orange is just not quite the right shade - the one you are using on your buttons would be a lot better.

The first thing I would do is change the width of your main table to 90% and align it center, it will pull the main content away from the side bars and make the whole thing look clearer.

Contrast is the main thing - you have a lot of excellent content, more contrast on the pages would present it better to potential users. As an example I changed the bg colour of the cells with 'Featured Streaming....' and Top Pick in them to red and the difference was amazing.

I get the same as mysticnight in opera and the usual message in internet explorer.

As I haven't see it this is perhaps unfair but do you really *need* pop ups? - There's a huge reaction against these things. Certainly the minute I hit a site that uses them (anywhere but here) I mutter some very bad words indeed to myself and exit.

Hi Everyone,

I'm not a fan of popups either but I am trying to get people to sign up for @hoopsking.com e-mail. It shows up the first time someone comes to the sight and not again. Maybe one time too many for some

*NOTHING* IN THIS POSTING CONSTITUTES LEGAL PROFESSIONAL OR TECHNICAL ADVICE. *NOTHING* IN THIS POSTING MAY BE TAKEN AS PURPORTING TO BE SUCH ADVICE.

You're not the only one who likes to cover his butt ... Glad to see that you're aware of the need and are trying to ensure that your butt is covered.

OK I'm back - fed, rested, refreshed, and all those other desirable things.

I'll start by saying that there's a lot of material on your site and that you've obviously put a lot of thought, time, and effort into it.

I echo Abbeyvet's suggestions and comments about your color scheme and navigation. As the site is at present it *is* a bit unclear. You're so close that it'd be a shame to miss out by a fraction.

Now the pop up:

Well it'll drive visitors away. Why not have a prominent welcome message instead offering people the chance to sign up for it. Try emphasisng that it's part of your efforts at building community amongst basketball enthusiasts etc etc.

The "agreement"

From the non-technical visitor's point of view clicking on "I disagree" does not *appear* to do anything.

In any case "to agree" "to accept" and "to consent" have very different meanings both in dictionaries and in many courtrooms.

I wonder whether clicking on "I agree" constitutes a valid acceptance. You *don't* tell your visitors what they are agreeing to.

That's why "adult" sites (to take the most glaring example) specify what it is you're agreeing to.

Perhaps you should rethink....

Many bar associations offer cheap advice schemes whereby for a small fee you get a ½ hour consultation with a local lawyer.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I changed the hyperlink colors to bright green. It is too glowing? Also I changed the big Headings to red and the navigation button text to yellow.

Frontpage mysteriously added a series of dots underneath the navigation button links.

Are there any borders round the image? Looks like it. Have a look at your page properties too.
