The Unveiling - 5/31/2001 17:39:00
I've just published my new site: macnicol.org using the Coolblu template. I'm pretty pleased with the results, it looks quite professional.

I've a bit of tweaking with pictures yet, but all in due time.

Please let me know what you think.

Sure.

Ah, the URL would help

OK, I finally noticed the partial URL

Looks preety nice to me. Good colors. I would get rid of the counter, IE & FP ads - they really add nothing to your content.

Looks good - it's always nice to see a product being used to its best.

On the chief page some of the graphics don't line up with their caption.

Also on the history page your text is broken up by the nbsp - stronlgy suggest you get rid of those unecessary spaces.

Gil is absolutely right about the logos they do nothing for the page and (in general) are a sure sign of an amateur. As you've got such a professional looking site it's a great pity to detract from that impression even slightly. Consider putting in an "About" page and sticking them there.

The counter on your home page - generally I'm against 'em but for such a site they are appropriate. However be aware that that counter simply lists the number of times that it is 'hit' *not* visitors. I went back to your home page twice and generated two extra "visits" that way. You'll need to analyse your server statistics to get a true idea of your actual number of visitors and what they looked at.

I presume that you plan on promoting the site. There's a series of excellent points made by the moderators of this forum in recent postings. You might like to check those out. A good web site to start learning about promoting a site is:

http://www.selfpromotion.com

Here's a direct link to another excellent resource:

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/register.html

(That page links to a superb metatags tutorial also - I urge you check that one out.)

Finally on a lighter note (what with me being an Irish/Danish gorilla and all ) I hereby serve you fair warning that I plan on challenging your chief to single combat the weapons are to be a caber (him) and a giant banana (me.)

If he wins (impossible) I'll go away. I if I win your clan must pay me a tribute of all the bananas and chocolate I can eat.

Hope this helps :-)

Gil and Gorilla,

Thanks for the comments. I will move the counter and other stuff....was a bit hesitant to put them in in the first place, but thought I'd get an idea of the hits....
also wanted to give a little credit to OutFront and you guys. I never would've gotten that site up without the help.

Thanks again...

I think it looks great.

The white surround on the scorrybreac image is a bit off - I have made a transparent gif of it for you to see if it looks better, check your email.

The other thing I would change on the home page is the bg of the little break out box - the pink jars with the rest of the site, try for something closer to the pink in the tartan. And personally I would prefer it with no border.

Ottawa sounds like it will be fun!

Looks awsome. I love the colors. One minor thing and it's probably just me, but shouldn't HighlandGames be two words? If not disregard. Keep up the good work and quit stealing our telephone poles

Wow, the response is excellent. I will make some changes a bit later today. And yes Mystic Night, you're correct about Highland Games being two words.... just lazy fingers, I guess.

And Gorilla, if our Chief or I (for that matter) were to lift a caber, they'd be calling 911 in a matter of seconds.

Here's a Scottish thought for you all:

Be ye early or be ye late,

Hi Bill,

I found the site fascinating (I'm English, by the way ) - very smart use of a good template. I'd go alng with the comments above - check out www.thecounter.com for a free and invisible counter which will give you some statistical data for visits to the site.

Best of luck with it.

Cheers
Andy

Andy from Spain. It's luvly to hear from you and thanks for the comments. I checked out the invisible counter... I tell you, OutFront has pointed me in so many productive directions. I'm totally grateful.

Anyway, nice to chat with you. We'll talk again.

Oh, and to Abbyvet, thanks again. I just noticed you're from Kilkenny. Someone who understands pipes and kilts. Excellent.

Guess I'll have to write and play a wee jig called OutFront....great name.

Cheers

Went back and had another look - you've been busy and improved it

Here's a thought: Have a link to a page called colophon - stick any "about" logos etc there. So few people know what colophon means that it's bound to get 'em interested

You know one of the things I like about here is that so many of the people whom one meets reply in the same spirit of fun. Thanks for that.

Hey! That means I don't have to tell you how unfit *I* am ...

(dark and fiendish cackling)

Hail thane of .... I win by default! So make with the bananas and the chocolate. (But I'll let you off if you agree to provide me with some fearsome warriors so that on my next trip back home to Dublin I can:

1) Storm castle gorilla.

2) Get my paws on the negative and the print of me as a very small boy dressed up in a kilt and sticking my tongue out at the camera .)

Gorilla...your suggestion about the word colophon works for me.... I'll roll it out soon.

And you're right, I've been busy on the website. That template was a real time-saver for me, and a great learning tool as well. In the current jargon of fellow Scots, it's absolutely brilliant!

Good talking with you...and thank you for the comments and help.

Cheers
