All,

There are so many ways to manage your CSS, in fact, there are tools which aid in the design and maintenace process.

Have you used a tool? If so, which have you used and which do you prefer? Which is (do I dare ask) the best?

I'm going to vote for stylemaster here.

I had downloaded the trial, and when I went to purchase the course things had changed from how the trial had it. The bundles were different a tad. So I contacted the owner of stylemaster and asked them if the one was avaliable anymore as I had one thing and the site had another thing.

They gave me the bundle plus a free course. I thought that this was outstanding of them to do this. I wasn't supposed to get the 4th product, but they gave it to me. Of course I totally thanked them for what they had done.

Their customer service is excellent and if you email them they respond with in about 48 hours.

I love their courses that they have, they are very well written.

I'm still working my way around the style master. I also like the fact that you can use this as an editor as well. great service and great product.

Hi Karl

I agree with Deb, the Stylemaster range is excellent as is their customer service.

I have used this tool as both an editor and a learning tool because it is annotated with lots of descriptive information about the various selectors as you use them.

John A the owner of the site helped me out at the very start of my learning curve by email and they also do a very useful range of free courses. Currently they are doing XHTML; you can also buy the courses to do at your own pace.

In addition to Stylemaster I am also using their Layout Master - or playing with it rather since I really need to get my head around positioning.

I can recommend SM - there is, or used to be a free trial available which is always a good thing - try it out and let us know.

I actually prefer to work with stylesheets in a text editor... tho I usually just work on them in whatever editor I'm in at the time.

So for me I guess it's:

Front Page
First Page

I actually use homesite, notepad and stylemaster. I only use these in edit style though.

I think that doing this in hand coding is the most important thing to do.

Hi Steve, I think that peppergal has the layout master, you might want to pm her and ask her about it.

Also, you can email customer service with any questions and they will get back to you. Great group of people over there.

Hey Steve, not that they are great or anything, but in the homework thread here, take a look at the pages. Maybe something could help you out a tad.

The nested divs page was a challange. But in the end, all lined up!

Oh yeah I know about your homework thread, I have been following it with interest. It was the nested divs that made me download layout master.

[:D] After a service one Sunday morning I was just sat there and a mate came up and said "you ok then" and I said no "I hate MACs" I told him my problems and we started talking div tags and css much to the "we-dont-undestand-a-word-you-are-saying" of people around us. Should have told them it was tongues.

I have to laugh at this one! along with peppergal. Just think, at least you have a person to chat with about it! (Imagine me, chating to meself here in a house where no one understands styles/codes etc...???)

In regards to the nested divs. I didn't use any sort of program except the hands to do this[;)] And a text editor and view pages as doing.

If you have not yet went to the codepunk.com, I highly recomend it. They have an advanced css as well as a beginners course. It is great. I really really learned tons in there. And I sitll have some of the lessons to go through yet. The gorilla team posted a link to it, if you can't find it let me know and I'll post the link for you.

My weakness in xhtml tables is giant, so to grasp the nested divs, blew me away.

is the home of a cms called Plone I myself have never used it but I have heard good things of it from those who do.

download from the top link first - run the install.

download the update from the second link and simply extract the files to the appropriate directory.

ROFLOL! (and tangling up the legs while doing so! Just sort of all over myself here with laughter![:D][8D][;)])

I have this neat little application that I purchased online that makes it great for looking at all sorts of code. I couldn't resist this one. It is called instant source. No need to download that css code to view it! Comes up right on the browser.

I'm off to look at some usage of the @import![;)] (oops to the wrong posting of the code punk site, but hey, something good came out of it!)

I'm going to vote for Topstyle. While they may not have the tutorials to help out the beginners, I find it to be a rather powerful editor. It does everything I could hope for and it's very clean. I suggest taking some time to learn its features and explore the possibilities.

Wow,

I left a thread (which I assumed was dead) for a while and came back to find it alive and kicking. In the time I spent away, I downloaded and tried Style Studio for a while, then Topstyle.

I am convinced (have been for quite a while) that more CSS and less mark-up is the way to go. So I hope no one got the impression that I was suggesting giving up doing it yourself, for an automated solution. Having said that, I have found that TopStyle is excellent.

It does not take away one's ability to code, but it really cuts down the development time since you can preview as you build without swapping windows (if you do not have a dual-monitor display) and so forth. I was really impressed to see that it was able to display quick references while I typed (similar to Visual Studio.Net), and the interface is really good.

The only downside I found was the price which I am not yet convinced is worth it. But, time will tell.

Hey Karl, Did you check out the westciv site? They have some really great things in there for css. I love the stylemaster. I only use it for an editor, but I know you can do more with it, just haven't had time to really go over the program.

Although I agree with Shirley and indeed everyone who thinks topstyle is a good editor ( more below) - and the inbuilt validation is a great resource I have to say that I have some reservations about it.

1. Purely subjective this [:)] - I really dislike the interface. It is thoughfully laid out - but something about it jars with me.

2. I really dislike the way it alters file associations by default so that it opens whenever I need to make a quick edit in for example notepad. - It isn't the only software that does this by any means and I strongly disapprove of it irrespective of what the app. - Leave my settings alone.

3. For complex layouts you are better to use something else. - see the postings above.

That said it is a very good tool. I personally feel that if you're learning css then you're better to start off with style assistant and notepad and spend the money saved on a good book. - Then as you move to more complex stuff decide if you want topstyle or not.

- One final point topstyle like all but the simplest of software tools is worth spending time learning how to use it properly. If you get it for goodness make sure you spend time learning the interface and the various shortcuts otherwise you're only getting half of what you paid for.

LOL I like your description "thingy" - good name for it. Unfortunately it doesn't do anything but very basic CSS well. Notepad is fine - but do check out some of the tools mentioned here. You'll definitely not regret it.
