A twist on voting - 10/19/2003 22:40:14
First of all, I should warn you all that I know enough ASP to be dangerous. :) I use Spooky's login and have been able to modify it (only because Spooky gives such excellent instructions.)

We're 'hosting' local kids pictures in their halloween costumes. -- When they're out trick or treating, they stop by and we take their picture & put it on the website. (The idea is that Grandma, Grandpa, friends out of town, etc can see their picture even though they're not here.) We'll be assigning numbers because we won't want anyone's name, address or other personal info on the web, of course. We're also going to have a contest. Visitors to the pages can vote on the best costume.

I've found some ASP scripts that have voting or polls, but what I've found has checkboxes. That might be unwieldy if we have 100 kids with pictures. :)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might set this up? If possible, I'd like to limit each person to one vote (so Grandma Jones doesn't get carried away and vote 100 times for her grand-kid. :) We're partnering with local merchants for some prizes.) It would be nice (but certainly not imperative) for visitors to be able to see the current voting.

I'm thinking a 'fill in the blank' rather than a checkbox, but how hard would this be to do? Thanks for any help you might have to offer.

I did a very similar thing, except my photos are of naked people, so I can't give you the URL here :) (Bet Spooky didn't know he was helping me with that a few months ago when I was ironing out details!)

Mine works where visitors rate each image on a scale of one to five using a drop-down: Smokin' Hot to Freezing Cold. You would of course do something like Excellent to Average. The ratings numeric values are added up and divided by the number of votes to create an average for each image (like 9.8), and then ranked into a Top Ten List.

PM me if you want to see it in action for a sense of how it works. I can send you the database and the associated code if you want. No photos, don't worry :) PM me if you want it, but there's no online admin for it -- I just put the photos online manually, and enter the name and ID number into the rankings database by hand.

I had a quick look around, but it tends to be mainly check /radio box type stuff.
From a user perspective this may be the better way (not the developer I know!)

The reason I say this, is if you had a version where the user just clicked on the image they liked, it would cause a lot of 'mis' clicks as typically a user clicks on an image to see if theres a larger one associated ?
Perhaps use the radio boxes, but have them next to a thumbnail. Clicking the thumbnail opens an image sized window.
