just made a site - 6/10/2001 18:57:00
Hi, this is the first website that I've ever made and its for my step dad's construction business. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Also, I couldn't figure out why the "contact us" and "gb homes" were not aligned correctly on the contact us page. Could someone please look at the code and tell me what is wrong. Also, I would like to change the color of the email address link at the bottom of the page while keeping the other two the way they are. Thanks for your help. THe address to the site is

http://server50.hypermart.net/campbemr/

THanks for the help.

Hi. Welcome to the world of web design.

I do have some suggestions. First, I would recommend more written content, especially on the home page. The pictures are nice, but they don't say a lot. I would also recommend keeping the photo/graphic style the same throughout the site (not crazy about the borders...too clunky).

It's important that you say where the business is located right away, even possibly on each page. By the looks of the houses I was guessing the South. I was surprised it was Cincinnati. I've lived there, too.

No submit button on the form?

Check into anti-aliasing the graphics to give them smooth edges.

Things are aligned the same on the contact page as on the other pages, at least in NN 4.7.

To change a link color, Hyperlink Properties > Style > Format > Font > fill out the dialog box > OK (and all the other OKs to close the dialog boxes).

Finally, I would recommend getting a host where you don't have the pop up windows. Those are VERY annoying!!! You can find good hosting with FP extensions for a very minimal price. Your own domain name is important, too.

Good luck with it!

Anti-aliasing is something that is done in a graphics program to smooth out the jagged edges of a curve...such as on a circle or a font...so it doesn't look like they are made of tiny stair steps.

Hi - and welcome to the world of web design from me also :-)

You've done a lot of work and for a first effort it's *very* impressive. Well done.

I looked at it under opera - so now you know it works under opera as well.

The front page is very slow because of the graphics most surfers won't wait the 30 seconds that it took to load for me (I'm on a fast connection.)

Why not have a set of "samples" pages and put them there - each one could have a write up?

Do you have satisfied customers? Would they be willing to be quoted on a testimonials page ?

You definitely need more text material on your first page. The first page is your welcome mat - or your front door. Its purpose is to draw me (your visitor) in. You've even got the raw material on your site to do it:

"Let me take a minute of your time to introduce to you the homebuilder you’ve been looking for. Gene Baehner, founder and president of GB HOMES, has been in the homebuilding business for over 25 years. During those years

Gene became disenchanted with the philosophy of the major homebuilders in the area. The philosophy that they will build your home their way or no way, with no flexibility at all. Well flexibility is a key ingredient in the GB HOME philosophy. From flexibility of design to flexibility of materials; from the use of your cousin the electrician to the use of you for sweat equity.

Gene works with you to build your home the way you want it."

This needs to be re-written it's all in the third person and (even worse) in the passive voice.

Try somthing like this:

Hi! I'm Gene Baehner and I'm glad you're here. if you want a home that reflects your needs, your desires, and most of all your style, you're definitely in the right place!

I'm in the business of building homes for people who ....

I've got this experience ...

Here's what some of my clients have said ...

(one quote only here)

Next point:

RUN SPELLCHECK - bad spelling is a total no no - and will turn your visitors away in droves. Beleieve me nthoing gvies a wurset impreiion than ....

ok you get the point I'm the world's worst typast btw spellcheck saves my bacon regulalry

Put in an email link as well.

Background and text colour:

The background image is quite "fussy" and definitely makes the text hard to read. Go for a font like verdana. consider making it bigger consider making it dark blue.

Here're some links to a very good creator for simple backgrounds.

Final point - re-read Sandy's comments.

Hope this helps :-)
