pageoneresults -> What do you think of this concept? (6/10/2001 23:55:00)

Hello everyone. Just finished redesigning a clients site who has been with me for almost five years.

This site was built in FP2000 and the .asp scripting was incorporated into new templates from the previous site.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. If you do go through the entire order process, please be sure to indicate that you are helping Edward in the beta testing, thanks!

Food Flavors and Colors

P.S. There are still quite a few button graphics that need to be updated to the new look and feel. Outside of that, we are fully functional and taking orders!

P.S.S. Yes, I know the server clock is ahead by about 20 years!

Lovely professiona site

Seems fine under opera except:

Opera told me that on this page:

http://www.goldcoastinc.com/order/topletters.asp

that a cooky didn't match the path. I exited and cleared everything and came back in what I call "just barely under raving paraoia" mode - ie tell me about every cooky.

Wasn't able to recreate it - sorry - temporary server glitch?

Quick point - on the page cited above at first it looks like the bottons are staggered. I had to look twice and I think its because of the shading on the left of your cornucopia graphic - it was slightly disconcerting.

I'd also be inclined to explain to people why they need to sign up and explain about the security benefits of doing so. ('cos I ain't the only paranoid surfer around )

Hi

Looks very smart - good choice of colours for the topic I thought.

I'd go along with Mark with his sign up and security comment.

Cheers
Andy

I haven't been able to access this one today. Is the server down?

Linda

pageoneresults -> RE: What do you think of this concept? (6/11/2001 14:47:00)

Yes, it has been down since about 0600 this morning. Our host is working on the issue and states that we should be back online sometime today. They were just recently bought out and there are some transfers taking place, this one happens to be one of them.

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm going to download Opera and see what the cookie is doing. I will be adding a privacy statement and explanation for the sign up over the next week. Most of the users to this site are familiar with the procedures for ordering samples and it has never really been an issue. But, you make a valid point and it is on the list of things to do!

We're live again after a crashed NT box according to my host. Anyway, any further critiques would be appreciated, thanks!

Note: The site you are viewing was originally built in FP97 and has transitioned through 98 and 2000. This is the latest version as of this past weekend!

Hey Gorilla, could you check the site out once more and let me know if you see the Cookie issue again? Thanks!

gorilla -> RE: What do you think of this concept? (6/13/2001 14:21:00)

Hi Edward,

Done and dusted - and this time I went through the whole process. The guy called gorilla who ordered lots of banana flavoured stuff was me

Cookie issue didn't raise its ugly head so looks like you got that one done and dusted.

I did a bit of asking around (with no names & no pack drill just "has anyone ever had this happen to them." )

I got one interesting response. - Apparently IIS does that occasionally (now when I say occasionally the guy I talked to said it only happened once in two years and that he was *never* able to recreate it.) So ....

Opera warned me that a script was trying to read a password - lol - well that's only reasonable!

Went into "I don't understand computers" mode and did my best to banjax your order form - by sticking in combination of true and false data. - Didn't succeed.

Question for you.

I *did* accurately put down that I was ordering from UK. Is it worth your while having:

Canada
&
NON-USA or NON - North America

(or whatever) in the drop down list of states?

Just a thought.

PS: - I did put in a comment that it was a dummy order helping Edward with testing as per request But i took a note of both customer number and order number and will cheerfully email them to you if it'll help keep your client's email lists etc clear of garbage data.

Thanks Gorilla. You said...

Actually you are dead on. Yes, a good portion of the visitors will be from outside the US and for some reason the database lacked a country field. I'm addressing that issue now.

I downloaded Opera and was surprised to see that the site appears as it does in IE. Its nice to see that Opera is supporting CSS and other elements that NS does not.

Thanks again for the test, I've probably sent about 30 of them myself over the past 36 hours. I owe you one!

gorilla -> RE: What do you think of this concept? (6/14/2001 20:51:00)

You're very welcome - I'll pop back in and redo - just stick a posting here when you want it done.

Agree with you completely about opera - it's actually more compliant than either ie or ns. Nice thing is that it's getting more and mr market share too.

BTW - Check out its developer help.

Mark

Is it just me or is the server down again?

I tried again in the wee hours of the morning, and again now... I still can't get the site to pull up.

We've been back up now for a couple of weeks. If anyone has a chance to stop by, please feel free to offer any feedback, thanks!

gorilla -> RE: What do you think of this concept? (6/29/2001 18:24:00)

Greetings went through it ( so you've got another "new customer" gorilla_again - a guy with cravings for banana chocolate and coffee ) worked a treat, nice smooth system I thought, seemed quicker too.

Scattered oodles of references to testing throughout it, mind you what I put in as my address "New Nest" "The Jungle Quarter" Wellingborough" UK was probably a dead giveaway

FYI: Addresses in this format work for UK posting thus my office is :

37b Victoria Road,
Wellingboruough,
Northants
NN8 1HH
UK

Scandinavian ones are a bit more precise - finicky and often got wrong by non-Nordics :

Gorilla AB
Somtehinggade 11 2tv
DK1234
Randers
Danmark

Something every USA company I've ever dealt with tends to get wrong is the bit that says:

Somethinggade (Street Name)
11 (Building Number)
2 (Floor Number)
TV (The door on the Lefthand side)

If you omit the 2TV 3TH STV STH or whatever then it's not properly addresssed and will either be sorted by hand (adds significantly to delivery time) or on occasion not delivered at all.

This might seem like a digression but I've known otherwise fine companies to be badly flummoxed by this sort of thing. At one time the International Postal Union had a publication listing the correct address formats - don't know if they still do.

What *I* do now is just hit the web find a site for a company in Outer Mongolia or wherever and follow that format entering it into the scheme shown below. All of this is apropos of the country field your solution works perfectly but I cant help wondering if a link to a separate page for non USA/Canada that had fields something like this:

Name
Company
Address line 1
Address Line 2
Address Line 3
Address Line 4
Postcode
Country

mighn't be better for your purposes - I know its another page and and and.... But as it happens I suggested it to someone else in a different context a little while ago. He'd been having lots of problems with mailing/billing address format problems he implemented the scheme above and said it had "saved his bacon"

I'll take my (smoked) bacon grilled and with some mustard please

PS: In theory the EU will be moving to a unified addressing format - I wouldn't hold my breath 'though.

Sorry 'bout all the edits my typing is particularly inaccurate today
