Using XML or CSV - 10/22/2003 19:39:22
Hi,

I have signed up with as an affiliate with a company that sells ringtones etc. They have supplied me with file (either in csv or xml format). Great, but what do I do with it, and how do I use it.
Can anyone give me an idea of how to get started using xml files.

thanks in advance

Does the company provide instructions on their site? Have you tried asking them what you are supposed to do with the file(s)?

Hi,

thanks for taking the time to reply. I have tried but have got no assistance. I know a little ASP html but virtually nothing on xml. I need something (like example scripts that read from an XML file) that I can learn from to develop my understanding and own solutions from.

Any ideas?

thanks

It is hard to say with out knowing what you are trying to do.
Are you trying to extract the info from the files?
Is this a webservices app?

Go XML all the way.

It is so much more superior to a csv file that comparing them is not even fair. That said, there are places where it *may* be easier to use a text file, but why not use this opportunity to learn a new (to you) technology?
XML just takes some getting used to... it is not difficult at all.

Try this site:
http://www.w3schools.com/xml/default.asp

There are also some excellent XML books available.

I must completely agree with Mojojo

I hope it will help you further to get this link to a very god place for tutorials - I myself used it as a backup resource when I was learning xml:

http://www.techtutorials.info/sitemap.html

You will have to scroll down quite a lot to get to the xml set of links. That site is a good one to bookmark.

csv isn't an extension:
CSV is short for Comma Seperated Values, simply means the individual fields in a flat file or database are seperated by commas.
