Reflect -> Throwing a BIG net (10/23/2003 7:35:41)

If you have read my posts on SEO on this forum you will remember me always stressing to throw a big net and to optimize you bottom money pages. No matter how little traffic the keywords will generate (read few returns in the SERPS).

I was reviewing some sales from yesterday. One sale came in from MSN. I entered the keyword phrase that the surfer came in on in MSN to see how many results were returned...15. Doesn't even seem worth optimizing for but I got a $200 sale from it. This is not unique for this site. When I say "money" pages these are my actual product pages in my DB. I am seeing more people enter through this bottom pages and for the amount of site entries VS. sales the ratio seems pretty high (not amazingly but higher than average).

I truly believe that by using a strategy of this nature that you will catch the overflow that others have not realized.

Just some food for thought and discussion.

Take care and throw a large net,

Brian

Hi

I posted something similar the other day - I read recently on another site someone asking about the use of "doorway pages" and their value - one sage replied to use all your pages on a site as if they were "doorway pages" - Brian's example above shows the worth of that advice. Good one!

Cheers

Very good & legit point. [:D]

Once your site is found in the search engines under keyword - access can & will be from a page that is not the home page. I try to optimize all my sites knowing this key fact.

It can take a little time to do this but normally the results are worth it. People search under things you do not expect & if you hit a good key word or phrase - you can get some unexpected results.

Great topic. I've had much success optimizing pages for tier 2 keywords. The reasons are pretty straightforward. If I sell widgets ( d*mn those widgets...) and optimize my page for "widgets", I am nothing more than a lemming, following the rest of the pack. I enter the marathon hoping for the elusive top 20 spot on G and become "one of 3,212,323 matches".

The Overture keyword tool is a great resource. (no, you don't need an overture account to use it...) The top search thread for my market had 53,000 searches last month. That makes it the "brass ring" that everyone hope to get. Overlooked are the next 3 keyword strings. Listed with 5,000 - 7,000 searches, these are the true hidden jewels. Of course this would all be idle talk without results. Suffice to say, it is a strategy that is working well... $$$

Cheers,

David

I do the same thing. I have a site, which can not be found under the top 30 results for the main keyword, yet I get a good amount of traffic from the other subpages that I have, and I make money of them as well.
