Go ahead, let me have it...... - 6/14/2001 23:07:00
Hi. I am a bit nervous to have one of my sites critiqued. But I can only grow and learn from the experience, as painful as it might be...lol. Seriously, I really respect the knowledge and experience found at this site so I will appreciate any input about mine.
One thing I am leary of is the loading times. Since I have switched to a cable modem, it is almost impossible to be able to do a real-life test on the page load times like the average modem user.
Please let me know how I could make this site better. All suggestions are welcome.

Hey I get first crack!

Overall impression - well done.

Before I critique let me point you to a great free utility for judging speeds. a company called Tafweb have a product called webspeed it lets you test a page or even elements of it at various speeds *and* allows you to arbitarily set a "web congestion factor." (For "web congestion factor" read 5 million teenagers simultaneously logging on to chat at the weekend.)

http://www.tafweb.com

Follow the software link and download webspeed. I've found it to be really good and much much more accurate than FrontPage's own estimates.

Your site:

Overall a nice fast site with a nice clear layout gives the information. That's what a site is meant to do and I *wish* that many "seasoned professionals" would do the same.

Quibbles:

One *big* one your links are way too small. Very hard to read and awfully easy to accidentally click on the wrong one. You'll be able to fix that very easily and I really urge you to do so.

Include a text link to "home" in the navbars not just your logo link @ the top of the page.

On your RV camping page(s) I think I'd consider putting your standard navigation bar at the top as well. Consistency is *everything* in navigation schemes.

That's it for now except that whoever did your composite graphic did an excellent job
it really gives the impression of a well run, safe, and fun place to be.

2nd edit - forgot to mention that it loaded at a very acceptable speed for me but I'm on a fast connection.

Sorry 'bout all the edits

Hi Flint,

Load time here on a 56k modem was fine.

I found the text links at the top and bottom a bit hard to read at that size with my default font. Also I see you default for some pages and comic sans for others - I've always found comic sans to be a bit tacky and a lot of people won't see it anyway - I'd go for a common one like Verdana or Ariel.

Best of luck with it

Cheers
Andy

Flint,

I liked your site. I to am new to the web design game! How did you set up the map to show your address for viewers?

Love it...

Loads fast, not too much information on the first page and easy to navigate...

especially your "Mission", not enough sites like that on the web.

The site seems a little difficult to navigate because of the many pages of information you have there. Especially when the RV camping brings up another window.

When you are using anchors to link to different sections of the page it's a good idea to add back to top buttons.

Looks great, I would try a different background color on the first page that was not so overpowering...light teal or?

Well, first of all it makes me want to go camping, and I hate camping, so that must be good : ) Being on AOL I think I might be your average speed surfer with a 56k modem. Sometimes it would take 20-30 seconds on pages and then I would get a "website not responding" message. I think that is caused by AOL as much as anything. Anyone else have this problem with another provider? I would change the link colors to match the background better, I'm not a graphics person so I am not really sure which color would blend nicely. Maybe someone else has a tip on that. Great site and content. I think the amount of visitors you get will prove you've done well, and I expect that to be many : )

Good luck!
