Opinion on possible new logo - 10/25/2003 11:49:59
I'm thinking about redesigning my website (well, I am going to do it). I made up a new logo and was wondering what the good folks at outfront think about it. My current logo can be seen here:

Actually pepergal, even though the new one is nice, I prefer the one that you have there now. It is classic and sheik. Looks good. But then that is just one persons opnion:)

I have to agree with Deb. Your current logo is, I think, more elegant.

there is too much going on with the new one. Old one is better :)

thanks everyone..I agree, now that I look at it more, that the new one is too busy...probably bordering on the tacky. I like the Viner Hand font for the word "design" and I'd like to alter my color scheme slightly...I want to use more of a copper color than the gold. I'm working on another logo using that font but keeping the design more simple. I'll post it as soon as I get a good one...thanks guys!

Reason for switching from the gold: I loved it when I did it, and so did three other people who I designed for, and they wanted it used somehow on THEIR sites...so I don't want it to look like it's the only color I use, LOL. Besides...I've had this color scheme for a while and would like to alter it a little. I still will be using the teal colors, but the copper really does look sharp with it....

I like your original one, too, however I know there is a time when you want to make a change so I encourage you to keep "playing" with the redesign.

As to the newest one, here are my thoughts:

I think you have too much tracking (ie. space between each letter). Try reducing it a tad.

Personally, I don't care for the bottom of the "d" in "design" touching the "k" in "karen." See how it looks moving the "by karen rice" down and to the right slightly.

I like the colors a lot however I think I'd make the "by karen rice" a smidgen lighter. Don't know how it would look but have you tried a drop shadow on the "website design?" Also play with making the "website design" more robust looking. Not sure what to suggest, but as I mentioned, play a bit. You'll get it!!

Thanks c1sissy and _gayle. Everybody likes that original logo...BUT ME! I've grown to dislike it enormously. Even my hubby likes it better.

But I've created a new one and revamped my home page....I'm putting it in critiques to see what kind of reaction it gets....

Not bad, plain and simple, but sets the purpose easily

I like your original too... maybe try just playing with it a bit rather than redesigning it completely?

I know what you mean about growing to hate it... I've redone my own logo at least a dozen times in 3 years. Eventually I forced myself to stick with the last one I did.

Logos are like sheep if you got a good one you should stick with it.

If I was forced to make a choice I would stick with your original. Although a subjective opinion your latest version does not appeal to me.

If you want a change then make it more simple. The most successful and well known logos are simple, your existing one, whilst attractive, is quite complicated and I guess would crteate a few headaches for a printer.

My advice would be to have another go at it. Try keeping to just a few colours and see what you come up with. When I am working on images (trying to be creative) I find that I have to be in the right frame of mind (mood if you prefer) sometimes I can spend hours and come up with nothing, other times it just flows. You'll know when it's right. It's one of those gut feelings. Trust your instincts then come and ask us for our opinion. I can assure you we'll like what your instinct tells you is right.

I just re-read this and all it needs is 'use the force' :) but it is something like that - I can't explain it - you just know.

Nigel

THanks everyone for all the great feedback. I'm not going with either of these logos, nor am I sticking with my original...because my original makes me go YECH! I hate the color scheme, actually, and made up a new one. Just haven't had time to upgrade my entire site yet. Here is my new logo. Someone on Critiques suggested snazzing it up a little...I haven't quite figured out how to do that yet....but here it is:

This is slightly smaller as it was bigger than Outfront's allowed file size! Here it is in context:

I think Nigel got it right.

As someone who has worked in marketing all my life, my experience is that logos should be simple - two or three colours is ideal.

This is not only because of potential difficulties and cost penalties if you ever have to print it. (Letterheads business card etc must be printed in 4-colour offset litho - even things like carrier bags at an exhibition can be a nightmare unless you are printing massive volumes).

There is also the impact on your target market as a branding device to consider. My company has just spent over €300,000 on a pan european research project prior to a re-branding exercise, this involved trying out several design concepts for two product areas. There were focus groups in London, Paris, Milan, Berlin and Madrid, and the overwhelming conclusion was that the simpler the design the more memorable it is to the consumer. If there is too much going on they don't "see" any of it.

So I would urge you to simplify still further.

I would use a plain font and drop the dark green background but that is my purely subjective personal view.
