What about this...? - 6/15/2001 21:09:00
I've been working on fixing my home page, which I've beed told loads very s l o w l y. I think I've shaved off a few seconds by getting rid of some unnecessary stuff, but I don't want to make it too plain. Since it seems to load OK over a high speed connection, I decided to create a "text-only" version for those with slower lines. The problem now is that the text only version is really boring. Can anyone offer some suggestions to make it a little more interesting while keeping the load time nice and fast? text only: http://www.members.tripod.com/joy.thedoghouse/alt_index.htm regular: http://www.members.tripod.com/joy.thedoghouse/index.htm Thank you in advance! Oh - and what do you think about this in general? OK idea to have a seperate site, or too annoying?

I think the slow loading is Tripod, not the site. BTW, nice site. I guess I'm a little strange, but I like the text version myself - if I were looking for info on Great Danes, I'd already know what a Dane looks like, I'd want so information. ------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Is there another word for synonym?"

Awwwww - WOOFERS!!!Nice page! I didn't look at a lot of the site, but I agree with Gil about Tripod. One thing I did notice in your code, though - I have always had "irregularities" with the way a Swish or Flash file worked unless I put it in its very own table cell all by itself with the cell width specified. In fact I never saw it work in Netscape unless I did that. Changing that on your page might make a difference, but that is just a W.A.G. I didn't even look at the text only page cause I wanted to see the woofers. Great photos! BTW, it loaded in about 10 seconds on my DSL connection, but it's 1;30 am EST so traffic might be lighter on Tripod's servers. [Ok, now that I realize I've been at it for 19 hours I think I'll go to bed. Night All!!]

I remember seeing this site before, it was good then, now .... WOW! or maybe WOOF! I prefer the text only site as well. But that's just me Sites hosted on places like Tripod can be very slow nothing really that can be done about that other than to do what you've done and go for an intelligent and thoroughly professional design. What can I say except 10 out of 10? ------------------ Hope this helps :-) Gorilla aka Mark Saunders http://www.computerdriving.com Email Address: marksaunders@techie.com ======= "Gotcha!" Hi,The only thing that is annoying is the Tripod popup window you see everytime you click on a hyperlink. I like the fact you have a text version and a graphics version...good job.

Thank you all for your nice comments! I'll stick that swish file in a table - thanks. Curiosity sake - what does it do that's weird if it's not in one? I wish I could host the site ad-free, but unfortunately, it's just not something I'm willing to pay for at this point in time. About pop-ups vs. banners: I'd like to take a poll as to which type of ads people find more annoying. Personally, I selected the pop-ups because if you minimize the first one that pops up, you don't see another one again unless the link uses a new window. However, I don't know how many people actually know this. Also, the banner ads on tripod seem to slow the loading of the site even more, which is definetely not a good thing... Thanks again, everyone, for checking it out and giving your feedback. It's much appreciated!

I vote for (AGAINST) popups - I hate 'em.Re: The banners - yes they're a big part of what makes tripod (and other free sites) so slow. Such places tend to be advertising driven and also very busy. Congrats on the site once more. ------------------ Hope this helps :-) Gorilla aka Mark Saunders http://www.computerdriving.com Email Address: marksaunders@techie.com ======= "Gotcha!" Unless I put it in it's own table cell with width specified it wouldn't show up in Netscape (vers 4.7) I didn't check yours in NN.
