How do I hide my index from people?

I host images for friends and family, and the way I have them anyone can view them by removing the file and extension and just viewing the path.

How do I hide that from view?

This appears to be some weird "feature" of your host. I'd talk to them. Even for a non-Win box, the way that's browsed is very odd.

Create a blank html page - name it something like index.html - and upload it. Some hosting companies allow viewing of folders if you do not have an index (home page) in the folder.

I have an index.htm file already for the entry of my site.

How can I create another and still keep that arrival page? Also, would that blank page go inside the host folder? I'm confused.

Ahh, ok. I see. So when I am linking a file from there I would use that path with the index.html at the end, followed by the file name and extension?

EDIT: That didn't seem to work. I added an index.htm file to the "host" folder. Not only can't I view the files like I did before. But I also can't seem to view any file that I have in there.

For example:

http://loftydesigns.net/host/purr.jpg
used to be the path to that image.

Now it's:

http://loftydesigns.net/host/index.htm/purr.jpg
and now I can't view it there either.

Each path was a blank white page. When I removed the index.htm from the address bar, I got a 404 error (I think that's when the error appeared)

Anyway, I had to delete the index.htm file for now as I have people linking from my site, and it wouldn't be good for them to see a bunch of red x's while I get this worked out.

Was it something that I was doing wrong?

And will STILL be - unless you moved the file. No reason the path would change because you added a file to the directory.

Adding the blank index.html file will prevent viewing an index of the directory by going to http://loftydesigns.net/host - it will have no effect on going to (or linking to) http://loftydesigns.net/host/purr.jpg
That's not a proper path

hehe, I missed out on a letter in the file name.

I'll go and try the index.html file in there again and see what happens.

EDIT: It works like a charm. I was evidently trying to view a nonexistent file :)

Now I can keep the snoops out of my index, hehe

I have directory browsing disabled but I still put a nice looking index page in the folder or a custom error page. I don't like the generic messages.

I did send them an email about blocking the ability to view my index files, before asking my question here. I finally got a reply from them. Here is what they said:

Who do you host with? I'm not happy with a lot of things at the one I have. For one, they tell me that certain things aren't possible for me to do, and then I find out through sites like this, that they are.

Also, they cache files on the server, which works ok if you aren't uploading any changes. I remember spinning my wheels for days and days trying to figure out why changes that I made to graphics weren't showing up on the web, even though the file manager area showed that only the NEW file existed there. It usually took 2 and 3 days for the change to become noticable on the website.

To get around that, I had to change the name of the file before uploading it, and then the NEW file would show, but so would the OLD one until the server cleared the cache.

Now I just saw that they have an option that allows you to clear the server cache 5 times in 24 hours by pushing a button, which allows for changes to be readily viewed.

It's little things, plus the inability to not log an IP of those signing a guestbook, that cause me to want to seek out another host.

I Agree Corey, but you have to be carefull sometimes the 'disable' rewrites an .htaccess file and FP doesn't paly well...

That is odd about the server cache. As soon as I upload a file - if it is the same file - it is available to eb viewed on the web.

I use Hostway (www.hostway.com) myself. Been with them for 4 yrs & even a re-seller of them since I am very happy with their services. Finding a hosting company is very difficult. I have been pleased with them - especially after hearing some stories like yours & others.

I bookmarked the other hosting site.

I truely am sorry that I got hooked up with the one I am with. It was recommended by someone I know through another discussion boards. I had tried Brinkser, but they didn't have much bandwith, and they didn't support Java either. So that's why I went to www.bappy.com.

Unless you pay for hosting the only type of service you can have is through their discussion boards (and they just recently added a $7.00 per telephone, 30 minutes per call, help support, or $15 per call comprehensive 1 hour one).

On the help forums, there isn't even a help tech there to answer the questions. It's customers supporting customers, and many of the questions are the type that need to be answered by the host themselves, but they don't even bother with those forums. I can't recall the last time there was a help-tech on that board. One was there for a few weeks when the boards were established, but then they left and never returned. Now it's strictly customers helping customers, and a lot of people go away completely frustrated, or their questions left unanswered.

Also, last year the company was under a DOS attack. No one knew what was going on, there was a lot of speculation that the company was going under, and people were panicked because they couldn't get to their sites for several days, and had no other way of finding information other than through that one forum.

Someone did some investigating and found a completely different board on another site (that wasn't even linked to from the help forum), that was specific for tech support. There were a lot of angry customers posting there when they found out that that forum was hidden from them.

Apparently it's a forum that you can go to and find out server issues. But that forum isn't even mentioned anywhere on the help forum, or anywhere that I can see in the "My Member Area", or on their main site for that matter.

It's been truely a terrible experience all around.

I sent another email to them asking them "How do I disable directory browsing", this is what I got back via email tonight:

I believe this is the same person that told me earlier that it was impossible. Now that said, can someone explain what the heck he's talking about?

What is a .htaccess file? And how do I make one? And where do I put it once I have one?

Following is a link that reviews the "options" that you can specify. It also shows the syntax needed to use. Please note the following link goes over all options. I think you want -indexes stated as an option in your .htaccess file. I however have never played in this enviorment or with .htaccess. The file should be in the root of your web I believe.

Now well see how off I was/am when a real Apache person responds.

You do not want to edit the .htaccess file with Frontpage (http://scanmaster.com/support/htaccess.html ) & you will want to FTP the htaccess fileinto your server. Most hosting companies do this for you.

Sounds like you might want to consider changing hosts or something soon.

I've decided that it's all a ploy. They give you half answered questions so that you get fed up and then call them, and they bill you $15 to give you the other 1/2, LOL

I still don't understand that access file they suggested. It sounds complicated and "dangerous" to use if you don't know what you're doing.

I use WS_FTP to upload my site even though my page is built in FP2000. I don't use anything in FP on my site that requires FP extensions to run, so WS_FTP is much easier for me to use, as it's a no brainer...point and click :)

Is there a link that gives a tutorial on how to edit or make this particular type of file? Those 2 links are way over my head. Scared me actually, hehe
