Web Awards - 6/19/2001 23:20:00
This is a word of warning about two companies. www.iawmd.com (International Association of Web Masters and Designers and their other company www.goldenwebawards.com I received an email out of the blue suggesting I submit my site for a golden web award, totally free, hightly thought of company etc etc. So for fun I did, thought I would at least get profession comments about what was wrong with my site. 7 days later email saying I had won an award. Yipee. You can also join their organisation (bells ringing) special price for award winner reduced from something line$70 to $30. What they had to offer for that quite appealed to me and was prepared to risk the money if products etc then were no good. Paid my money, got email confirmation. Went to members site, couldnt log in. wasnt ever given login details. Emailed, got sent login which didnt work, in fact message came up that I wasnt even in their database. Three days and three emails later, still no response. Send stronger email saying if they dont send workable login or give me my money back I would broadcast that they were a bogus company wherever I could. Within 12 hours a workable login was sent together with annoyance that I had called them bogus. I was still unhappy about them. I had purchased a domain name and had done nothing with it, not even a biz card. Submitting that site for an award. Guess what, this morning I was notified that my non-existent site had just won a Golden Web Award. So next tim I upload I am removing their award graphic from my site, I feel like leaving it there but posting a warning, but not knowing what legal trouble I could get into I wont.so this is the warning, stay away from them, they ARE bogus.

Wow.....you got an award for a site before even starting! Must have a great name. I used to have an interest in these awards.....but simply lost that interest, then got that "golden web award" (you really burst my bubble. Well, I'll be taking that award down now.As for the IAWMD have you seen some of their members sites? I'm in no position to judge another's site.....but a perspective customer wouldn't go through their listing, then choose you based on your presence there....it's not impressive.

I did afterwards (its always afterwards isnt it!) check out some of their previous award winners, yes some site s looked good, others , well say no more, which made me even more suspicious. But if anyone out there knows how I can really check them out, or where I can go to report them, let me know. I dont care about getting the money back, I just dont like being ripped off and conned.

sigh .... an awful lot of these "awards" are either looking for money or looking for links. Joe Burns wrote an article - I think in February - about awards.http://www.htmlgoodies.com/letters/ Wdvl have some stuff about awards as well. http://www.wdvl.com These days though I just don't bother.
