Serious Trouble - for me anyway..please HELP - 10/28/2003 5:17:31
Dear All,

I trust that you are well and feeling useful. Please tell me that there is someone here that can assist in my dilema.

2 days ago....actually no let me start again. I run a company in Thailand (anyone fancy a holiday - opne going FREE to the person with the nest advice) which covers all of Thailand for scuba diving. I made the site www.pjscuba.com 1.5 years ago whilst under house arrest (long story) and am fully aware that it is not that pleasing to the eye. My feeling is of reluctance to change too much (I just add bits on) as it works and business is brisk. ALL of my business is done through the site hence there must be something right about it...however, I digress.

2 days ago this silly fool managed to screw with my computer so much that it required a full re-format.

Now I know that for many of you guys this is going to be such an easy question but I am not a web designer but a diver and the water pressure must be getting to my head as I am very stupid with computers.

I lost the lot!!! Email! Web Site! Porn (only joking!!)! Everything.

I use FP extensions to upload my site; as stated it's easy and I am simple.

Having tried to import my web from source i.e. Open FP, click File > Import > Import Web Wizzard > Location on the web > sit there for 2 hours biting my nails as to whether iyt would work or not - it didn't:) What happened was that only a fraction of the site imported i.e. images and text but no frames or borders etc.

Please someone help me for the TOP priize of a trip to Thailand!

How can I get the web site undamaged back on to my computer. I understand that there is some way where you can go into the site (?????) and publish it back to my computer as the destination. Please if you try to explain something - make it in laymans terms.

I am so desperate that I will leave a couple of email addresses wide open to spammers of p***s enlargemenst and begging letters:

pjsbkk@hotmail.com
pjsthai@hotmail.com

Please if somebody would be good enough to reply with an answer I shall....I don't know....do something to make that person very happy. I need the site back ASAP as I have to update certain features each week like the news and trip reports etc. I am lost without my baby.

Please help.

Dayupha

Hi Peter and welcome to Outfront,

Open FP and go to File > Open Web.
Where it says Folder Name type in the URL of your site - http://www.pjscuba.com and click Open.
You'll be prompted for your user ID and a password (which I assume you know.:):))
Input the information and click OK.
The site should open "Live" from the server.
Once it's open go to File > Publish Web. (Do not use "Import")
Type in a location on your hard drive to publish the site to - something like http://localhost/pjscuba.
Select Publish all pages and click Publish.
The site will be published to your hard drive.

Let us know how you get on.

Quality site! Quality response!

Haven't tried it just yet but it sounds like you know what you are saying.

Ever been to Thailand before?:)

I shall let you know how things turned out. I'll certainly be hanging around here for some of these juicy tips and hints that I have read this afternoon also.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to single you out buddy (BUT THIS IS A FREE FOR ALL) - I have tried your suggestion and the process has worked so far. i.e. I have opened the web "live" in FP.

I am scared to progress any further after checking the "navigation". The reason being that many of my pages are not there. They appear in the folder list but not on the navigation.

Anything that I should be wary of or just jump straight in like diving?

Looking forward to some more great advice.

My very best regards,

Dayupha

Hi dayupha, welcome to the forums!

Are the pages that aren't in the navigation, on the server that you have your web page on?

You could always work on the site live.(from where you have your site hosted) Add the pages to the navigation if you wish before you publish this back to your computer.

I understand how you feel. I had my nephew format my computer and didn't save the sites that I was playing with (only a true beginer, lol) So I was in a state of HELP for a while. But all is well and back on the computer, and......now I know when Nephew dear formats, make sure that he gets my webs that I had on here:)

Dear C1Sissy,

many thanks for your input.

All of the pages are hosted by the same and on the same server (as far as I know anyway :) as long as no one has done anything without my knowing.

The pages do appear in the folders view so I would assume so.

I tell you what - life is too short...UI am going to say To H*&L with it and try to publish. Actually it was that attitude that caused me to have to reformat in the first place:)

I shall see if any more advice comes along. PLEASE HELP ME! Must bear in mind that the time here now is 19:30 and I cannot start drinking until I have this solved - please hurry!:)

Hey peter!

I would imagine since all are there that it would be ok to publish to your computer.

However, it wouldn't hurt to work on this while on the web as well.:)

You could also wait to see if I have given you the correct advice:)

btw, good luck!

Peter assuming that you had the pages in the nav view previously have you tried Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks?
Regardless of that, publishing back to your HD won't do anything to the site on the server. Go for it, we can't have you not being able to get a drink.:):)

I must say that you guys (generic) have been fantastic. You have gone out of your way to assist a guy that has never posted here before - has little to offer but comes here to take.

Thanks so much for all of your assistance.

Mike you are obviously right about the server side of things i.e. the live site will not be affected so I shall go ahead and publish now.

I shall let you know how I got on - I have book marked this site and hopefully by earwigging on some of the tips etc shall be able to put back into the community what I have taken out.

My very VERY best regards,

Peter Scott

Hey Peter, don't worry about asking for help! That is what this forum is here for!

Also, I have been here a tad over a year, and am now just begining to feel comfortable answering questions. Grin, though I do always suggest that maybe you should wait to see if I am correct:)

The site is shooting it's way through the stars to my PC right now and the wife has just handed me my first six pack. (sorry did I say first - I meant "my six pack"):)

You've done me proud - it has never tasted better.

Many thanks.

Mmmmmm! Not sure what happened there :)

All looked great but for some reason it is not publishing the web as we see it onto my desktop. If you want to hurt your eyes go to www.pjscuba.com (not pleasing) - but the red, white, blue, white and red is the Thai flag. When all is published to my computer it asked me if I wanted to view the site - "why, yes of course sir". On viewing everything above the bottom Red line was missing. Everything!

Very, very strange.

I am trying it again now as maybe I pressed something that I should not have. I do seem to recall (BEFORE DRINKING :)) that on publishing it asked me one question like "....blah...blah has been modified would you like to update"....I also remember clicking "NO".

The most bizzare thing (really weird) is that where all of the top frame is i.e. the navigation header (see even my terminology is bad) should be it has been replaced with a banner (FP generated - you know those template graphics that they try to get you to use). The banner says "P J Scuba - Diving Thailand" - I have never made this before - EVER! Weird.

As mentioned I am in the process of trying agin now as I type but if any of you useful guys know of any ideas or have encountered similar then please do not hesitate to pop up.

Please feel free to call me stupid also if it helps me solve the problem:)

Wish me luck.

My very best regards...

Peter Dayupha

Hi - I know you guys are good so heres something to really get your teeth stuck into.

I published the web to my computer again as Mike wisely suggested and all seems to have gone well. However...

...It has got to the point where the message 'Processing Web Updates' has been displayed.

Great, however....

.....another message 'Error: Cannot Open File "Thumb. two letters (i forget) .tmp" for writing'.

The problem here is that it only gives you an option of clicking "OK". I did exactly that and the screen displayed a message "Publish EWeb to Where" - just like I had been doing nothing for the last 3 hours.

I opened the web again in Frontpage and still have the problem of no Headers. They are completely missing.

Now I really am confused, stressed, in need of assistance and probably another drink:)

Please - any more advice would be fantastic.

PS: Sorry about the missing two letters in the error message but I was typing this message when I previewed the web in IE and it opened up in this window. I had written (copied) the message down but then foolishly closed the window. Duh!!:)

My very best regards...

I believe the missing letters were db.

Hence...

'Error: Cannot Open File "Thumb.db.tmp" for writing'.

Any ideas for this desperate soul:)

My very best regards...

Peter (turning sckitzophrenic).

Hi Peter,
Let's try something different. Open FP and create a new web on your machine - File > New > Web, select the "Empty Web" template. We want to stay away from your previous "publishes". Close that web and open pjscuba then try publishing it to the brand new clean web you just created. What version of FP are you using and on what OS?

BTW
quote:

Thumbs.db is a file which is created in a folder with Movies or Pictures so that you can view a piece of their content without actually opening them (you can't see thumbnails unless you have the option to view system files turned on). Thumbs.db is there so that you don't need to reload a thumbnail every time you browse that folder.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for the message...I have yet to try it but right now I'll try anything.

To answer your question I am using FP 2000 on Windows XP.

I shall let you know how I got on.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the second tip. I have tried it but the out come is still the same and I want to cry:)

This is extremely worrying now and I do not know which way to turn.

Any alternative suggestions other than "start again":)

My business is falling apart daily:)

HELP!!!!

My very best regards...

Peter

PS: how difficult to update a web live is it? I have never tried this before. Are there any complications when publishing - or anything to watch out for?

Hi Peter,

I've got to head out to work but as for editing the site live it is quite doable. Just open it live and do what you need to do. There's no need to publish when you're done as you're doing it "Live". Do try NOT to make any errors while you're working live as obviously you don't have a backup copy.
