I need some help - 6/20/2001 15:39:00
Ok,

I have a client that wanted me to redesign a pre-existing site. They asked that I come up with a new and exciting concept (Like most clients do). So I did. I gave them 2 concept ideas. When I design sites, my monitor is set at 800X600 and this is what I generally design toward. One of the concepts I came up with was bound "graphically" to 800X600 and the other was pretty stable at higher resolutions. My client looked at both and decided they wanted to keep their old site. Come on, you asked me to be create something new and you keep the old. What's up with all that. Now that the old site has been recreated, my client is having difficulty with monitor sizes. My contact at the client has his monitor set at 1024X768 and of course everthing he saw on my design was small. I optimized it to meet his need and now when you look at it at 8X6, it looks like poop. Is there anything that I can do to help this situation??? Here is a url where you can take a look at what has happened.

Any advice would be appreciated

"Poop" is the right word...

Wish I could help you more technologically, but I'm more business oriented, with a slight dash of artistic ability and a dangerous brush with FrontPage. So, I'll defer to one of these moderators or other members, people who actually know what they're talking about.

As for me, at first blush, I'd guess it's got something to do with table usage or lack thereof. I'll have to take another look...

If there's one thing I've learned at Outfront, it's TABLES, TABLES, TABLES.

Some general advice first:

Don't design for one resolution. Design so that your sites at least "work" if not look good at 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768.

Don't touch a client's current site until the new design is complete and approved. At that point, upload the new site to his server. You should also have received his final payment by the time you publish to his server. This is an excellent use for subwebs--building a site and publishing to your locale, then being able to publish to a client's server when the transaction is complete.

It's not uncommon for clients to reject designs. It's good to get a partial payment before you begin a project.

As for the current site, try setting the tables in percents rather than pixels, and be sure your math adds up. The cells seem to be in percents, but the tables (the one I saw anyway) in pixels.

Back to the drawing board, huh?
Been there.

Sorry say this but a great design has been spoilt by designing for one resolution. The frames look really bad under opera @ 800*600 they don't look good under ie 5.5 either.

Try using either tables or css poitioning instead. (Frames are a bad idea for search engines too.) i'm a css enthusiast but personally I'd go for tables in this case.
Make sure you get the arithmetic right though, it seems a bit off to me right now.

Is your client having ISP problems? It kept on timing out on a fast connection.

Lovely elegant design with fixable problems.

Hope this helps :-)
